{"id":60023,"date":"2016-08-23T05:00:47","date_gmt":"2016-08-23T10:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=60023"},"modified":"2016-08-20T09:30:35","modified_gmt":"2016-08-20T14:30:35","slug":"60023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=60023","title":{"rendered":"Poof"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Joe Doakes from Como Park emails:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There was a cholera epidemic in Nepal.\u00a0 UN Peacekeeping forces from Nepal were sent to Haiti.\u00a0 They set up camp by a river.\u00a0 Their latrines discharged raw sewage into the river.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Haitians downstream drew water from the river.\u00a0 They got cholera.\u00a0 At least 10,000 people died and hundreds of thousands were made ill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">The UN finally admitted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/08\/18\/world\/americas\/united-nations-haiti-cholera.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fhealth&amp;action=click&amp;contentCollection=health&amp;region=stream&amp;module=stream_unit&amp;version=latest&amp;contentPlacement=4&amp;pgtype=sectionfront&amp;_r=1\"><span class=\"s2\">yes, its troops caused the epidemic<\/span><\/a> but no, they wouldn\u2019t compensate any of the victims for it. \u00a0So far, pretty much what I expect from Liberals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But here\u2019s the interesting part:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u201c . . . the United Nations\u2019 cholera eradication program has failed. Infection rates have been rising every year in Haiti since 2014, as the organization struggles to raise the $2.27 billion it says is needed to eradicate the disease from member states.
