\nI\u2019m old enough that having amateur debaters attempt to play their tricks on me has become tiresome.\u00a0 In a recent on-line exchange, my opponent said \u201cI can see you have a lot of anger on this issue.\u00a0 You need help.\u201d\u00a0 Nice try, but no cigar.\u00a0 I know that trick and it no longer works on me.<\/span><\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/span>Accusing me of being angry is a rhetorical device intended to disqualify my opinion by implying that I\u2019m not rational, I\u2019m hysterical.\u00a0 It\u2019s also intended to thereby divert attention from the hollowness of my opponent\u2019s intellectual position and therefore acts as an admission that her position IS hollow since, if my opponent had a worthwhile argument to make, she\u2019d have made it; the fact she didn\u2019t make one is compelling evidence she had none to make.<\/span><\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/span>My response was along the lines of: \u201cDon\u2019t snivel.\u00a0 It\u2019s not seemly to sit there bawling when you\u2019ve been bested.\u00a0 Stiff upper lip!\u00a0 Oh, you weren\u2019t crying?\u00a0 Of course not, no more than I was angry, so let\u2019s both can drop the posturing.\u00a0 Talk sense if you have it; if not, shut up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
