Grievance Pimp&#8217;s Gonna Pimp Grievance."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Preface: \u00a0I don&#8217;t have a whole lot of pet peeves. \u00a0I really don&#8217;t. \u00a0I&#8217;m one of the most easygoing guys you&#8217;re likely to ever meet, ever.<\/p>\n<p>But I do have a few:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Using the term &#8220;begging the question&#8221; as a synonym for &#8220;that brings up another question&#8221;. \u00a0It&#8217;s not. \u00a0It&#8217;s just not. \u00a0&#8220;Begging the question&#8221; means &#8220;using your conclusion as evidence for your conclusion&#8221;. \u00a0That may come up in this story.<\/li>\n<li>The phrase &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=56988\">right not to get shot<\/a>&#8220;.<\/li>\n<li>People who bring a conversation &#8211; usually a business meeting &#8211; to a screeching halt with either\u00a0of the following:\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Let&#8217;s take a step back&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;I&#8221;m just trying to understand, here&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Anyone who pronounces the word &#8220;processes&#8221; like &#8220;Pro-se-SEEZ&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But the biggest one of all is people who try to tell me what I&#8217;m\u00a0<em>really\u00a0<\/em>thinking. \u00a0People who\u00a0<em>know what I&#8217;m thinking better than I do<\/em>, and aren&#8217;t afraid to tell me not only what it is, but <em>why it&#8217;s a horrible thing<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Attention: \u00a0You &#8211; whoever you are &#8211; are not qualified to tell me what I&#8217;m\u00a0<em>really\u00a0<\/em>thinking.<\/p>\n<p>Ever.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t like it when people do it to me, and I don&#8217;t much like people making\u00a0constant habit of doing it to other people. \u00a0Telling people what they\u00a0<em>really\u00a0<\/em>think (especially because that&#8217;s what your narrative\u00a0<em>says\u00a0<\/em>they&#8217;re\u00a0<em>really\u00a0<\/em>thinking) is no less noxious than telling them what they really\u00a0<em>are<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>OK. \u00a0On to the actual story.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Tony Cornish is a former cop. \u00a0He&#8217;s also been among the most steadfast protectors and advocates for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms in the Minnesota legislature, so he&#8217;s one of the good guys.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/minnesota.cbslocal.com\/2016\/06\/08\/cornish-letter-to-the-editor\/?cid=facebook_WCCO-TV_%7C_CBS_Minnesota\">raised a kerfuffle among the kerfuffling class with a recent op-ed in the\u00a0<\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/minnesota.cbslocal.com\/2016\/06\/08\/cornish-letter-to-the-editor\/?cid=facebook_WCCO-TV_%7C_CBS_Minnesota\">Strib<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>that gave some fairly radical advice:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/readers-write-june-7-interacting-with-the-police-double-standards-in-self-defense-clergy-sex-abuse-gop-trump-hillary-clinton-joe-mauer\/382160361\/\" target=\"_blank\">a letter to the Star Tribune<\/a>, Cornish lays out rules for interacting with police:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cDon\u2019t be a thug and lead a life of crime so that you come into frequent contact with police.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cDon\u2019t rob people, don\u2019t use or sell drugs, and don\u2019t beat up your significant other.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cDon\u2019t hang out on the street after 2 a.m. Go home.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cDon\u2019t make furtive movements or keep your hands in your pockets if told to take them out.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cDon\u2019t flap your jaws when the police arrive. Don\u2019t disobey the requests of the police at the time. If you think you are wrongfully treated, make the complaint later.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t hang out and yell at people after midnight,\u201d he said over the phone. \u201cDon\u2019t be involved in crime. Don\u2019t give police a reason to be there in your face.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On the one hand, the small-l libertarian in me thinks some of those &#8211; especially the whole &#8220;don&#8217;t be out after 2AM&#8221; when you have every legal right to\u00a0<em>be\u00a0<\/em>out at 2AM bit &#8211; veer a little close to &#8220;if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about&#8221;. \u00a0And you&#8217;d have to be a serious pollyanna to think that some cops don&#8217;t abuse the whole &#8220;lawful order&#8221; thing.<\/p>\n<p>And as far as &#8220;making a complaint later&#8221;? \u00a0Yeah, that never works. \u00a0You&#8217;ll be making a complaint about cops, to cops. \u00a0Or to people whose best interest it is to stay tight with the cops. \u00a0Either way, what&#8217;s the point?<\/p>\n<p>On the\u00a0<em>other\u00a0<\/em>hand? \u00a0If there&#8217;s anyone who&#8217;ll make you sympathetic for cops, warts and all, it&#8217;s some of their critics:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<section id=\"main-story\" class=\"column-item\">\n<article class=\"article-bucket content\">\n<div class=\"story\">\n<p>Cornish says his letter is a response to the activist groups wondering how to reduce the use of police force. He says it\u2019s not complicated, and he provides a list for how to not get shot by police.<\/p>\n<p>In a phone interview with WCCO, Cornish says he\u2019s tired of news stories about police violence in which the *cops* get blamed for using excessive or deadly force against people he calls \u201cthugs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou see all these cop videos where they give order after order, and they just stand there and something bad happens and they wonder why in the world that happened,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/section>\n<\/blockquote>\n<section id=\"main-story\" class=\"column-item\">\n<article class=\"article-bucket content\">\n<div class=\"story\">\n<p>I want to ask &#8220;is it too much to wish that everyone in the world, citizens and cops\u00a0both, had the good common sense not to be idiots and pocket tyrants?&#8221;, but if you study any human nature at all, you&#8217;ll know it&#8217;s really only a rhetorical question.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of rhetoric (I&#8217;m adding emphasis):<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/section>\n<blockquote>\n<section id=\"main-story\" class=\"column-item\">\n<article class=\"article-bucket content\">\n<div class=\"story\">\n<p>[Minneapolis NAACP president Nekima] Levy-Pounds called the letter \u201cracist,\u201d and \u201cintolerable,\u201d with <strong>coded language<\/strong> aimed at the African American community.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/section>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Coded language.<\/p>\n<p>See my preface above. \u00a0When someone accuses someone of &#8220;coded language&#8221;, what they&#8217;re saying is &#8220;you&#8217;re not saying what\u00a0<em>you\u00a0<\/em> think you&#8217;re saying, and you&#8217;re not thinking what you think you&#8217;re thinking. \u00a0You&#8217;re saying and thinking what\u00a0<em>I\u00a0<\/em>say you&#8217;re saying and thinking. \u00a0And boy oh boy, are you an awful person for saying what I&#8217;m saying you&#8217;re really saying!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I get it. \u00a0Political rhetoric ain&#8217;t beanbag. \u00a0But invoking &#8220;coded language&#8221; is the weasel&#8217;s argument.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<section id=\"main-story\" class=\"column-item\">\n<article class=\"article-bucket content\">\n<div class=\"story\">\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s drawing upon racial stereotypes that people often use to justify the use of excessive force against African-Americans, even when African-Americans \u2014 who are unarmed \u2014 are killed by law enforcement,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/section>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While I&#8217;m not going to excuse all police shootings &#8211; sometimes people make mistakes when the stress is on . And some people, cops included, do <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2015\/04\/07\/us\/south-carolina-officer-charged-murder\/index.html\">just-plain-evil things<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But someone being &#8220;unarmed&#8221; doesn&#8217;t mean they&#8217;re not potentially a lethal threat. \u00a0Every year, among Minnesota&#8217;s 90-odd homicides, some portion are people who are beaten to death &#8211; including, every year, a couple of &#8220;one punch kills&#8221;. \u00a0A big enough guy hitting someone hard enough to break a piece of brain loose, or to drop his head on a curb, can kill them just as dead as any gun will. \u00a0Circumstances matter.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<section id=\"main-story\" class=\"column-item\">\n<article class=\"article-bucket content\">\n<div class=\"story\">\n<p>Levy-Pounds says that\u2019s exactly what the letter is really about \u2014 what she calls, \u201cthe Jim Crow North.\u201d She\u2019s been leading protests over the over-concentration of police in black neighborhoods, and over-criminalization of African-Americans in Minnesota.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/section>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There is certainly a discussion to be had about overcriminalization &#8211; and not just of black people in North Minneapolis. \u00a0There is also a conversation to be had about the collapse of the black family, which is not helping the black community out one little bit.<\/p>\n<p>But the last person who will start that conversation is Levy-Pounds, who (along with many of her followers) will accuse you of &#8220;white supremacy&#8221; for, for example, disagreeing with her on any point of her agenda. \u00a0Or for taking the last parking spot. \u00a0Or for ordering mayo on a sandwich.<\/p>\n<p>If everything is &#8220;racist&#8221;, then, really, is anything racist?<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE:  Commenter Night Writer brought up the good question:  Is Chris Rock also a White Supremacist?<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uj0mtxXEGE8\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Preface: \u00a0I don&#8217;t have a whole lot of pet peeves. \u00a0I really don&#8217;t. \u00a0I&#8217;m one of the most easygoing guys you&#8217;re likely to ever meet, ever.
