{"id":59077,"date":"2016-06-06T12:00:50","date_gmt":"2016-06-06T17:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=59077"},"modified":"2016-06-06T10:08:17","modified_gmt":"2016-06-06T15:08:17","slug":"the-new-brownshirts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=59077","title":{"rendered":"The New Brownshirts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, on the 72nd anniversary of the D-Day landings, I&#8217;m genuinely pessimistic that this nation learned &#8211; or can learn &#8211; one of the most important lessons of the war.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, it seems that there are those in our society who really don&#8217;t want this country to learn it.<\/p>\n<p>Words like &#8220;Fascist&#8221; and &#8220;Brownshirt&#8221; have been overused, mainly but not quite exclusively by the left, over the past 4-5 decades \u00a0One might even say they&#8217;ve been devalued, if you&#8217;re conspiracy-minded.<\/p>\n<p>In light of events this past week, they need to be re-valued, and Americans need to get a quick education in political history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alliance F\u00fcr A Better Deutschland<\/strong>: \u00a0With the collapse of the Weimar Republic, German politics returned to a state that hadn&#8217;t been seen since the chaotic late teens and early twenties; political parties retained private groups of thugs to harass, intimidate, and attack political opponents&#8217; demonstrations, meetings and events.<\/p>\n<p>And it wasn&#8217;t just eggs and water bottles; in the &#8217;20s, German parties enlisted\u00a0<em>Freikorps<\/em>, groups of armed World War I veterans who fought gangland battles and, in some cases, pitched military engagements in the streets of German cities.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest participants were the Communists and and, to a lesser degree, the Socialists on what&#8217;s conventionally called &#8220;the left&#8221;, and their opponents (called &#8220;the Right&#8221;, although the sought to govern scarcely less as authoritarians and totalitarians than did their opponents), of whom the National Socialists (the Nazis, of course) became the leader.<\/p>\n<p>Like I said, it got bloody . On July 17 1932, &#8220;Bloody Sunday&#8221;,\u00a0Communist &#8220;direct action&#8221; activists attacked a Nazi rally in Altona, Germany, killing 18; revenge and counter-revenge played out across Germany afterwards, as it had before.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 746px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com\/736x\/7d\/03\/6e\/7d036e2be5a2f110c116a69c79eaca00.jpg\" width=\"736\" height=\"527\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Altona in the wake of Bloody Sunday<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This was one of many events that framed the Nazis final ascent to control of the country six months later.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 464px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/germanhistorydocs.ghi-dc.org\/images\/highres_30002560%20copy.jpg\" width=\"454\" height=\"337\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Brownshirts&#8221; &#8211; the official name was <i>Sturmabteilung<\/i>, or &#8220;Assault Detachments&#8221; &#8211; and members of <i>Stahlturm<\/i> (Steel Helmet, a Nazi veterans group) burn Weimar flags as the Nazis assume control of the <i>Reichstag<\/i>, or Parliament. The evening, and the coming months, saw more pitched battles in the streets between party thugs, before the government moved on to more decisive means.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Not only have Americans living today never seen such a thing &#8211; groups of thugs acting as a direct action wing of political parties &#8211; but in fact the little information they have about this is pollyannaish in the extreme. \u00a0It wasn&#8217;t just Germany, it didn&#8217;t end 80 years ago, and it can happen here.<\/p>\n<p>In Poland in 1980,<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 456px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/c7.alamy.com\/comp\/DMN8EN\/epa03989113-units-of-zomo-motorized-reserves-of-the-citizens-militia-DMN8EN.jpg\" width=\"446\" height=\"330\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Polish &#8220;riot police&#8221; &#8211; thugs with shields &#8211; take down an enemy of the state in 1981.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In Panama in the late eighties,<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 230px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/SPECIALS\/2000\/cnn20\/story\/viewpoint\/jaco\/dignity.batallions.jpg\" width=\"220\" height=\"168\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Manuel Noriega&#8217;s &#8220;Dignity Battalions&#8221; &#8211; a make-work program that put thugs to work attacking dissidents and protesters.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>in Iran in 2008,<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 302px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.cdn.turner.com\/cnn\/2009\/WORLD\/meast\/06\/22\/iran.basij.militia.profile\/art.basij.profile.gi.jpg\" width=\"292\" height=\"219\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><i>Basiji<\/i> assaulting Tehran University, putting down the uprising in 2008 (with the tacit support of Barack Obama).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And here in the US, today:<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 377px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.cdn.turner.com\/cnnnext\/dam\/assets\/160603140119-donald-trump-rally-clash-san-jose-june-2-large-169.jpg\" width=\"367\" height=\"211\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thugs, likely with the support of liberal plutocrats with deep pockets, attack a Trump rally last week in San Jose. As usual.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There&#8217;s precious little difference between the people above and the people below:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.freedomisknowledge.com\/meltingpot\/burnbooks350.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"250\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And I don&#8217;t know that I trust Americans to know this anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Politics + force = where horrible things come from.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, on the 72nd anniversary of the D-Day landings, I&#8217;m genuinely pessimistic that this nation learned &#8211; or can learn &#8211; one of the most important lessons of the war.
