{"id":58895,"date":"2016-05-24T12:56:02","date_gmt":"2016-05-24T17:56:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=58895"},"modified":"2016-05-24T14:07:39","modified_gmt":"2016-05-24T19:07:39","slug":"as-the-narrative-burns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=58895","title":{"rendered":"As The Narrative Burns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few weeks ago, Nekima Levy-Pounds\u00a0went to the Minneapolis park and recreation board, and did what she does best; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=58704\">made a lot of noise<\/a>, claiming the Park and Rec board was&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>wait for it&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>wait for it&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>racist.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately \u2013 according to the City Pages \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.citypages.com\/news\/look-at-the-stats-and-the-minneapolis-parks-board-doesnt-seem-very-racist-8292245\">the facts don&#8217;t exactly bear out her charges of \u00a0&#8220;Racism&#8221; against the park board<\/a>\u00a0(emphases added):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Parks and Rec breaks down its budget into North, Northeast, South, and Southwest service areas. North has 49 park properties and 59,119 residents, according to the 2010 census. <strong>Parks and Rec allocated $243 per person in north Minneapolis from 2010-14<\/strong>&#8230;During the same time, <strong>Southwest received $85<\/strong> for each of its 120,376 people, and <strong>South received $83<\/strong> for each of the 136,160 residents<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Oh yeah, and the Park Board has big plans \u2013 and they don&#8217;t include the southside:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>While parks all over the city will get some funding to maintain what&#8217;s already there, <strong>neighborhood parks in areas of concentrated poverty will be the only ones getting any funding for improvements<\/strong> \u2014 amenities like playgrounds, wading pools, fields \u2014 during the first five years.<\/p>\n<p>Parks in wealthier neighborhoods won&#8217;t see a cent more than what it costs to prevent them from breaking down.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure what the race-relations version of &#8220;all moo \/ no cow&#8221; is, but I&#8217;ll be looking for it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A few weeks ago, Nekima Levy-Pounds\u00a0went to the Minneapolis park and recreation board, and did what she does best; made a lot of noise, claiming the Park and Rec board was&#8230; wait for it&#8230; wait for it&#8230; racist.
