Before he can react, Avery LIBRELLE – who is walking through the alley making notes about people who aren’t separating their recycling – surprises him. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

LIBRELLE: \u00a0Hey, Merg! \u00a0 Why are you people so panicky about transgenders picking their own restrooms?<\/p>\n

BERG: \u00a0I’m not. \u00a0The whole thing is a tempest in a teapot – except of course for the Feds stepping in to make, literally, a federal issue about something that is really no issue at all.<\/p>\n

LIBRELLE: \u00a0But you Republicans are all angry and scared!<\/p>\n

BERG: \u00a0Enh. \u00a0Not me. \u00a0I’ve worked around some transgendered people. \u00a0It’s really no big deal.<\/p>\n

LIBRELLE: \u00a0 Ha ha ha ha ha! \u00a0Hah! \u00a0You should know that transgender people are very very unlikely to commit any crime at all!<\/p>\n

BERG: \u00a0Right. \u00a0I know that. \u00a0But let me ask you, Avery – since transgendered people have a very very very low crime rate, we shouldn’t be imposing all sorts of pointless regulations on who goes into what restroom?<\/p>\n

LIBRELLE: \u00a0 Right! \u00a0That would be bigoted and transphobic!<\/p>\n

BERG: \u00a0Bigotry and a design-your-own phobia! \u00a0Exactly! \u00a0Being mortally afraid of, and imposing pointless regulations that will have absolutely no affect on crime, on populations that have essentially negligible offense rates, is bigotry and phobia!<\/p>\n

LIBRELLE: \u00a0Exactly!<\/p>\n

BERG: \u00a0(Getting excited<\/em>) \u00a0In fact, we should\u00a0never\u00a0<\/em>impose pointless rules and regulations on people who commit vastly fewer crimes than the general population, because such regulations are rooted in bigotry and fear!<\/p>\n

LIBRELLE: \u00a0Yes! \u00a0Absolutely!<\/p>\n

BERG: \u00a0All of them!<\/p>\n

LIBRELLE: \u00a0All of them! (LIBRELLE leaps up, kicks heels in glee<\/em>)<\/p>\n

BERG: \u00a0So background checks for law-abiding citizens transferring guns are…<\/p>\n

LIBRELLE: \u00a0(Not quite realizing the change in subject<\/em>) Phobic and bigo…HEY!<\/p>\n
