{"id":58646,"date":"2016-05-03T05:00:55","date_gmt":"2016-05-03T10:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=58646"},"modified":"2016-05-01T10:09:30","modified_gmt":"2016-05-01T15:09:30","slug":"this-calls-for-clippy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=58646","title":{"rendered":"This Calls For Clippy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Joe Doakes from Como Park emails:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I got sick of Microsoft pelting me with emails so I downloaded the free upgrade to Windows 10.\u00a0 Naturally, the software developers couldn\u2019t resist \u201chelping\u201d and \u201cimproving\u201d by moving things around.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Control Panel still exists, but it\u2019s not called that.\u00a0 It\u2019s in \u201cSettings\u201d and you get there by left-clicking the \u201cWindows\u201d icon in the lower left (formerly the \u201cStart Button\u201d) to bring up the \u201cLife at a Glance\u201d panel of icons that includes the \u201cCog\u201d which looks like a gear wheel to me.\u00a0 Left-click that to get to another page of groupings and click around those icons until you find the Control Panel feature that you wanted in the first place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Not an improvement, in my opinion.\u00a0 They\u2019ve made it harder to find, probably intentionally, so that mere users don\u2019t change the default settings approved by the god-like geniuses who set up the new user interface.\u00a0 After all, I don\u2019t own the software, I merely have a license to use it, when it feels like working, which is not all the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u201cTask Manager\u201d doesn\u2019t show up at all and I can\u2019t figure out why not.\u00a0 What \u2013 the developers think the apps will never hang up?\u00a0 I\u2019ll never need to crash a program to get out of it?\u00a0 Nonsense, it\u2019s Windows, of course they\u2019ll hang and of course I\u2019ll need to crash them.\u00a0 Already have.\u00a0 But to get that power, you must to right-click the black stripe at the bottom of the screen (the \u201cTask Bar\u201d) to bring up an alternate context menu in which Task Manager is one choice.\u00a0 Nobody tells you that, it\u2019s not in the help menu, I had to find it on YouTube.\u00a0 Windows REALLY doesn\u2019t want the mere operator messing around with useful stuff like how to get the computer working again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">I know, I could spend the money on Apple which would work first time, every time, but I hate how fascist they are (Ve haf made ze settings unt you vill use zem unt you vill like zem and you vill not change zem, verstehen sie?).\u00a0 Or I could learn to use Ubuntu or Red Hat or Linux and spend the rest of my life fighting with incompatible software workarounds.\u00a0 Or buy a Chromebook and give my every thought to the Democrats (technically the federal government bureaucracy, but that\u2019s pretty much the same thing nowadays).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">I just want it to work.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t seem like so much to ask<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Joe Doakes<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\">I work in &#8220;User Experience Design&#8221;
