Every week, the Court of Appeals releases opinions on criminal cases.\u00a0 Every week, there\u2019s an ineligible person in possession of a pistol.\u00a0 And these aren\u2019t all of the ineligible persons in possession \u2013 these are only the ones that had a good enough legal argument to appeal.\u00a0 There\u2019s no telling how many other felons had guns but didn\u2019t appeal, or plea-bargained the charge away.\u00a0 It\u2019s a genuine epidemic and nobody is going anything about it.<\/p>\n
So here\u2019s the question for every one of those cases: Where\u2019d this particular felon get this particular pistol?\u00a0 Did he pass a background check?\u00a0 Order it off the Internet?\u00a0 Buy it at a gun show?\u00a0 Which Obama gun-control proposal would have prevented him from acquiring the pistol?\u00a0 We don\u2019t know because the court doesn\u2019t report that fact and if the cops asked at all, the felon undoubtedly lied to protect his source.<\/p>\n
Maybe we need an incentive program?\u00a0 Maybe the cop says \u201cLook, man, you\u2019re going away.\u00a0 Nothing can change that.\u00a0 But if you give up the name \u2013 and the name checks out \u2013 we hand you $1,000 cash, tax free.\u00a0 \u00a0Plus you get a carton of Marlboros and one extra hour of yard time each week.\u201d<\/p>\n
Maybe it wouldn\u2019t work.\u00a0 But maybe it would.\u00a0 We know from the War on Drugs that cracking down on suppliers is far more likely to dry up the supply than piling more restrictions on innocent, law-abiding citizens.\u00a0 Why not use a proven technique in the War on Crime?<\/p>\n
