{"id":57223,"date":"2016-01-29T08:36:36","date_gmt":"2016-01-29T14:36:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=57223"},"modified":"2016-01-29T09:23:43","modified_gmt":"2016-01-29T15:23:43","slug":"fiction-and-fact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=57223","title":{"rendered":"Fiction And Fact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Fiction: <\/strong>Liberal &#8220;comedians&#8221;, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/comedian-gun-purchase-5-minutes_us_569c3f4fe4b0b4eb759ecfab?platform=hootsuite\">trying to show<\/a> how easy it is to &#8220;legally&#8221; buy a gun without a background check, show that the law and system works\u00a0(not that they&#8217;re apparently smart enough to see it that way, judging by their responses in the comment section)\u00a0&#8211; and flirt with committing\u00a0a felony in the process:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1in7Zoqh3gw\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Note for those who don&#8217;t know their gun laws: &#8220;Comic&#8221; Steve Hofstetter\u00a0took his friend in with his ID to do the buy, which &#8211; &#8220;joking&#8221; notwithstanding &#8211; went through without a hitch. \u00a0<em>Because &#8220;Brent&#8221;, the &#8220;buyer&#8221;,\u00a0was perfectly legal<\/em>. \u00a0 He has a criminal record and is, as such, a relatively low risk, himself.<\/p>\n<p>But if he&#8217;d given the gun to someone who was otherwise disqualified from owning a gun, \u00a0that, too, would be a felony. \u00a0And while\u00a0Steve Hofstetter&#8217;s &#8220;comedy&#8221; would be a disqualifying felony in a just world, it&#8217;s not in this one. \u00a0But if Steve had a couple DWIs, a domestic abuse rap, or some other mischief on his record? \u00a0They&#8217;re both committing a felony.<\/p>\n<p>So you might ask &#8211; what if a\u00a0<em>criminal<\/em> with a long felony rap sheet had gotten a friend with a clean record to go to a gun show and buy a gun, and give it to him out in the parking lot? \u00a0Well, it&#8217;s already illegal, and both parties would be committing a felony. \u00a0And if we instituted mandatory background checks to close the so-called &#8220;gun show loophole&#8221; &#8211; more about that below &#8211; then what?
