Of course, those are precisely the behaviors that constitute Acting White and which no self-respecting authentic Black youth would be caught dead doing, lest he be ridiculed as an Uncle Tom by peers and in the media.<\/p>\n
Worse, the tests measure knowledge that might have been essential to success in 19th<\/sup> Century Prussia, on which our educational system was based.\u00a0 But is it knowledge essential to success as a 21st<\/sup> Century American? What is \u201csuccess?\u201d\u00a0 The Amish don\u2019t define \u201csuccess\u201d the same as the Clintons and President Obama’s vision of being an American seems nothing like Ronald Reagan’s vision.\u00a0 Do Blacks define \u201csuccess\u201d the same as Whites or Asians or recent Central American immigrants or African refugees?\u00a0 \u00a0What should schools teach when it\u2019s obvious that students do not share the same definition of \u201csuccess\u201d and how can different measures of “success” constitute one American Dream?<\/p>\nWhy should all students take the White Success tests? Maybe there should be a different tests to measure Black success?\u00a0 I\u2019m not talking about racist joke tests like \u201cJasper steals three watermelons . . .\u201d but a serious inquiry into what constitutes \u201csuccess\u201d for modern Black Americans and what knowledge, skills and abilities are essential to achieve that success?<\/p>\n
I’m asking for a serious inquiry:\u00a0 what is The American Dream?<\/p>\n
