impeccable behavior.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fact<\/strong>: \u00a0Joan Peterson has a long, grotty history engaging in perfectly civil conversations with perfectly civil freedom advocates &#8211; and then turning around and telling people the freedom advocates were abusive or nasty. \u00a0There are witnesses.<\/p>\n<p>Now, back to Heather:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The recent gun tragedies underscore how essential it is to work for a future where our kids won&#8217;t live in fear of gun violence.\u00a0In 2015, we made progress toward that future, and with your support, we can build on our momentum in 2016.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Lie #2<\/strong>: \u00a0Well, sure &#8211; &#8220;we&#8221; did. \u00a0But not &#8220;Protect&#8221; MN or the &#8220;Gun safety movement. \u00a0Oh, crime dropped fast, as millions of new firearms entered circulation. \u00a0But the gun grabbers lost every legislative battle in Minnesota, even with Michael Bloomberg&#8217;s millions lavishly backing them. \u00a0And &#8220;Protect&#8221; \u00a0No, they didn&#8217;t. \u00a0While a &#8220;constitutional carry&#8221; bill was submitted, &#8220;Protect&#8221; MN had virtually nothing to do with its death in committee. \u00a0 The push for it was largely symbolic, since with a DFL governor and Senate it was never going to pass anyway.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We successfully advocated for a state law prohibiting the &#8220;straw&#8221; purchase of guns, in which a person with a clean record buys a gun for a prohibited person.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Lie #4<\/strong>: \u00a0Right. \u00a0They did. \u00a0<em>With the full cooperation of all the gun rights organizations that matter in this state<\/em>. \u00a0The existing law was inadequate. \u00a0And it was the gun rights groups &#8211;\u00a0<em>not the hapless Martens and her impotent organization<\/em> &#8211; that did the heavy lifting.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>In 2016, a critical election year, we need your support to get the word out about the extremism of the gun lobby, <\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Lie #5<\/strong>: \u00a0The human rights movement, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=2&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjv2cSbpevJAhUC7yYKHUu8BmUQFgghMAE&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnn.com%2F2015%2F10%2F21%2Fpolitics%2Fgun-control-poll-americans%2F&amp;usg=AFQjCNHG1OCQsBO4E18I32TuTyJRcGhDEA&amp;sig2=NCGbRFMY3sPVNVaUEuR3Yg&amp;bvm=bv.110151844,d.eWE\">as shown in recent polls<\/a>,\u00a0<em>is\u00a0<\/em>the mainstream. \u00a0The grabbers are the extreme, supported only by a thin residue of crazies and a bunch of money from &#8220;progressives&#8221; with deep pockets.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>and about the effectiveness of gun safety policies &#8212; such as background checks before all gun sales.\u00a0<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Lie #6<\/strong>: \u00a0While &#8220;gun safety&#8221; policies like putting criminals in jail work wonders, nothing &#8220;Protect&#8221; MN advocates, <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/blog\/2015\/10\/08\/4-reasons-universal-background-checks-ar\">least of all &#8220;universal background checks&#8221;<\/a>, will.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Next year, we can expect the gun lobby to propose:<\/p>\n<p>1) A Minnesota constitutional amendment to nullify all gun laws by declaring guns, and carrying them everywhere, a &#8220;fundamental&#8221; right.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Lie #7<\/strong>; \u00a0While &#8220;Consitutional Carry&#8221; is a fine idea, and works wonders in most places it&#8217;s been tried (currently five states), not to mention in Minnesota before 1974, it&#8217;s not really on the agenda while we have a DFL Senator or Governor.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>2) Repealing Minnesota&#8217;s background check law,<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Lie #8<\/strong>: \u00a0Huh?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>arming teachers,<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Lie #9:\u00a0<\/strong> While there&#8217;s no rational reason that teachers\u00a0<em>who are legally entitled to carry firearms\u00a0<\/em>shouldn&#8217;t be able to in school, nobody can seem to find where &#8220;arming teachers&#8221; is on anyone&#8217;s agenda.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>and allowing any permit holder from anywhere to carry a loaded gun in MInnesota.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Not So Much A &#8220;Lie&#8221; as Really Stupid<\/strong>: \u00a0If someone has a permit to carry in another state, why should they not be recognized here?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But with your support, we are here to raise our voices for common sense at the Capitol and beyond.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Lie #10<\/strong>: \u00a0Nothing about &#8220;Protect&#8221; MN is &#8220;common sense&#8221;. \u00a0 They&#8217;re calling for a return to the policies in effect when crime was double what it is today.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We spread the word about what the gun industry is doing, and how we can stop them. We appear regularly in the Minnesota media to push back against extremists.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Lie #11<\/strong>: \u00a0Well, no &#8211; &#8220;Protect&#8221; MN doesn&#8217;t appear &#8220;regularly&#8221;. \u00a0They may come out of hiding when they can control the agenda, or when they know a reporter or interviewer is utterly uninformed or just doesn&#8217;t care that much. \u00a0If they don&#8217;t, they &#8211; meaning Heather and Joan Peterson, usually &#8211;\u00a0invariably look like idiots.<\/p>\n<p>They don&#8217;t appear <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=55801\">with media figures who won&#8217;t promise to paint Heather&#8217;s toenails<\/a> on the air.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Protect Minnesota is the only Minnesota-based non-profit organization dedicated to ending gun violence.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Mostly A\u00a0<strong>Lie #12<\/strong><\/strong>: \u00a0They are, by default &#8211; Michael Bloomberg&#8217;s &#8220;Everytown&#8221;, after swallowing up the local chapter of &#8220;Moms Want Action&#8221;, closed up shop after the last session. \u00a0They&#8217;ll be back &#8211; and they&#8217;re the dangerous ones &#8211; but they&#8217;re saving money during the off-session.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We have been here since 1991 to advocate for better gun policy, organize our communities, and educate the public on gun issues.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Lie #13<\/strong>: \u00a0As Heather Martens, again, has never made a single original, substantial, true statement about the issue, it&#8217;d be more accurate to say they&#8217;ve been here to &#8220;miseducate&#8221; the public.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We envision a future in which our kids are safe to play and learn in every community.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Lie #14:\u00a0<\/strong>No, they don&#8217;t. \u00a0Gun control kills &#8211; and is rooted in the sort of racism that the better elements in this country strives to cast off.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We reject the world view promoted by the gun industry that exploits fear to boost profits &#8212; no matter what the human cost.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Lie #15<\/strong>: \u00a0Heather is putting the cart before the horse. \u00a0But to be fair, it&#8217;s just a chanting point she&#8217;s been given by her superiors.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We don&#8217;t have the deep pockets of the gun industry, but we have you.Thank you for all you do,<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><strong>Lie #16<\/strong>: \u00a0<\/strong>They have the deep pockets of some of the biggest &#8220;progressive&#8221; donors out there; the Joyce Foundation and other liberals with deep pockets. \u00a0They fund &#8220;Protect&#8221; MN to the tune of $300K. \u00a0 GOCRA, which eats &#8220;P&#8221;Ms lunch every year, operates on a fraction of that budget, almost every penny of it in nickels and times from real people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lie #17<\/strong>: \u00a0 When she says &#8220;We have you&#8221;, she may mean it in the singular sense of the term. \u00a0&#8220;Protect&#8221; MN&#8217;s membership would fit in a booth at Perkins, if they ever met.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>Heather Martens<\/div>\n<p>Executive Director<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Not So Much A Lie As Pointless<\/strong>: \u00a0She&#8217;s kinda a lame duck.<\/p>\n<p>17 lies, and\u00a0that wasn&#8217;t even a very long press release.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m not sure why I bother with Heather Martens anymore.\u00a0 I mean, she was never a worthy opponent &#8211; for lil&#8217; ol&#8217; me, much less the Human Rights activists that actually matter &#8211; and she has yet, in all her years of plumping for gun control, to utter a single, substantive, original true fact.
