{"id":56230,"date":"2015-11-24T12:00:55","date_gmt":"2015-11-24T18:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=56230"},"modified":"2015-11-23T10:19:57","modified_gmt":"2015-11-23T16:19:57","slug":"with-our-feet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=56230","title":{"rendered":"With Our Feet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the weekend, I went out looking for a movie to watch. \u00a0I don&#8217;t go to a whole lot of movies, but I&#8217;d heard that <em>Truth<\/em>, the mash note to Mary Mapes and Dan Rather, staring Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford (someone I dimly remember being a star when I was in grade school) had been out for a couple of weeks. \u00a0So I tried to find it on a screen somewhere in the Metro. \u00a0It wasn&#8217;t so much out of interest, or any expectation that the film would be anything but a rhetorical tongue bath for Rather and Mapes from their BFFs in Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p>But the collapse of Rather\u00a0(along with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=34306\">Gordon Kahl shootout<\/a>) is one of two major news stories where I&#8217;ve been, if not &#8220;involved&#8221;, at least watching from the sidelines rather than the bleachers; John Hinderaker and Scott Johnson were co-hosting the NARN at the time they broke the story; the show on the Saturday following\u00a0the seminal &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.powerlineblog.com\/archives\/2004\/09\/007699.php\">Sixty First Minute<\/a>&#8221; posting at\u00a0<em>Powerline\u00a0<\/em>was one of the most intense programs I&#8217;ve ever been involved in in my life.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#8217;t find the movie. \u00a0A month after release, after a disastrous opening (one of the 100 worst wide-release openings in history), I couldn&#8217;t find it anywhere. \u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/articles\/rather-shameful_1039561.html?nopager=1\">shamefully\u00a0revisionist<\/a> retelling <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/movies\/?id=truth.htm\">grossed a little over $2 million<\/a>\u00a0on a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Truth_(2015_film)\">budget of $11 million<\/a>. \u00a0 &#8220;Lucy Ramirez&#8221;, Bill Burkett&#8217;s fictional source for the fraudulent documents, is easier to find than\u00a0a screen playing\u00a0<em>Truth<\/em>. \u00a0[1]<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 446px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aircraftinformation.info\/Images\/SR-71_03.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"436\" height=\"344\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The search for a screen &#8211; any screen &#8211; in the Twin Cities showing Truth, starring Robert Somebodyorother and Cate Galadriel over the weekend, got a little intense.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Now, even the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/truth_2015\/\">critics thought the movie adequate at best<\/a>, for starters. \u00a0But is the fact that it&#8217;s also basically unvarnished American progressive propaganda part of the reason it tanked so very very badly?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tankage:\u00a0<\/strong>I don&#8217;t expect much from our self-appointed coastal &#8220;elites&#8221;. Most of them serve only as warning signs about the diminishing value of an &#8220;elite&#8221; education.<\/p>\n<p>But I have always counted on Hollywood, if no one else, knowing how to protect its own\u00a0market.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, not so. More and more, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-hollywood\/2015\/11\/21\/blowhard-box-office-blowback-mockingbird-underperforms-seth-rogen-julia-roberts-tank\/\">Hollywood seems to find its ideology<\/a> \u2013 at the corner of which is preening contempt for everyone who lives between the Hudson river and the Sierra Madre &#8211; more important than its bottom line.<\/p>\n<p>And this seems more clear than ever, given last weekend&#8217;s box office results; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-hollywood\/2015\/11\/21\/blowhard-box-office-blowback-mockingbird-underperforms-seth-rogen-julia-roberts-tank\/\">three other &#8220;can&#8217;t miss&#8221; movies open to results anywhere from bad to disastrous<\/a>. \u00a0None of the movies were especially political &#8211; but their stars certainly took an ill-advised run at it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Secret In Their\u00a0Eyes&#8221;, vehicle for Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts (a pair of women most famous for being redheads \u00a0married to vastly more talented men back in the 1990s, both of whom have been flexing their hatred for conservatives, Republicans and Christians on overdrive\u00a0for years) opens to less money than the Northern Alliance earns on\u00a0a typical weekend.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/hss\/storage\/midas\/13cb9586d83af4aba186c0dc454a34b5\/200610214\/Erin+Brokovich+Screwed.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"374\" height=\"177\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Documentary evidence that Julia Roberts once existed.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And the latest Seth Rogen movie \u2013 whose name elludes me, but was probably about being really drunk \u2013 tanked with a bullet not long after the notoriously self-impressed Rogen erupted in an obscene tirade against Ben Carson for, presumably, leaving the plantation.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 455px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bluejews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/seth-rogen-42689798_edited-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"445\" height=\"316\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">No &#8211; the photomeme caption is not satire.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Most shockingly? The &#8220;can&#8217;t miss&#8221; final episode in the <em>Hunger Games<\/em> franchise came in about 20% below expectations.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 526px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/phoenixwave.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Silver_Linings_Playbook.jpg?dbc801\" alt=\"\" width=\"516\" height=\"288\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jennifer Lawrence, this time in the indescribably wonderful and utterly apolitical <i>Silver Linings Playbook<\/i>, for which she earned a very well-deserved Oscar, back before she tried to turn into Rosie O&#8217;Donnell. No, you know what I mean. Seen here with her co-star, Bradley Cooper, long before his own Oscar-caliber turn in <i>American Sniper<\/i>, which probably renders him <i>trayf<\/i> to J-Law. I&#8217;m just going to sit and think <i>what could have been<\/i> for a few minutes, here.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Why? \u00a0Well, maybe this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A mere ten days before the film\u2019s release, Lawrence went so far as to expose her anti-Christian bigotry, telling Vogue magazine that Christians are \u201cthose people holding their crucifixes, which may as well be pitchforks, thinking they\u2019re fighting the good fight. I grew up in Kentucky. I know how they are.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;I know how they are&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/images6.fanpop.com\/image\/photos\/33200000\/Silver-Linings-Playbook-jennifer-lawrence-33292072-450-189.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"189\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">In <i>Silver Linings Playbook<\/i>, Cooper and Lawrence&#8217;s characters hilariously botch their big final move at the dance contest.
