{"id":55893,"date":"2015-10-29T08:49:08","date_gmt":"2015-10-29T13:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=55893"},"modified":"2015-10-29T09:49:17","modified_gmt":"2015-10-29T14:49:17","slug":"how-bad-were-the-moderators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=55893","title":{"rendered":"How Bad Were The Moderators&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;of last night&#8217;s CNBC GOP debate?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Even Brian Williams is saying he wasn&#8217;t there&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/em>&#8212; Mark Okern (from Facebook)<\/p>\n<p>I watched the first half of yesterday&#8217;s GOP debate, before I had to go do some family stuff.<\/p>\n<p>There had been some hope that CNBC &#8211; an ostensible financial network &#8211; would ask some substantial questions about financial policy. \u00a0And there were a few, sort of, in a way.<\/p>\n<p>But &#8220;are you an evil comic book villain?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>John Harwood came across as a Liberal snidely whiplash. Becky Quick&#8230;wasn&#8217;t very. \u00a0 Carl Quintanilla sounded like he was hosting a cable access production of <em>Jimmy&#8217;s First Debate<\/em>. \u00a0And Jim Cramer? \u00a0I don&#8217;t know if he was on cold medicine or had taken a couple of shots to the head before he went on the air, but good lord, that performance will be taught in broadcast schools for decades to come as an example of how\u00a0<em>not\u00a0<\/em>to sound when reading off a teleprompter.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s entirely possible (except for Harwood) that they were just trying to come across as tough, hard-nosed &#8220;journalists&#8221; &#8211; an effect that lasts precisely until the phrase &#8220;evil comic book villain&#8221; came up.<\/p>\n<p>But the hour I spent was worth it, if only for this; Ted Cruz&#8217; jeremiad against the media was one for the ages:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rYj5iTCr1Pg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Glorious.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But he should have answered Quintanilla&#8217;s substantive question!&#8221; Er, did you catch the question? &#8220;Does your opposition to a &#8220;moderate&#8221; budget deal mean you&#8217;re unqualified?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE: \u00a0As I put this morning&#8217;s piece together in my head last night, I thought &#8211; as I often do when matters of discerning bias\u00a0<em>in others\u00a0<\/em>come up &#8211; &#8220;Am I right, or is this just confirmation bias?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Well, it&#8217;s not just me; <a href=\"http:\/\/pjmedia.com\/diaryofamadvoter\/2015\/10\/29\/cnbc-and-jeb-bush-commit-suicide-in-boulder\/?singlepage=true\">Roger Simon torched the moderators pretty ruthlessly<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The big story \u2014 the A-story \u2014 on Wednesday night \u2014 the actual full blown case of seppuku \u2014 was CNBC. \u00a0The network will never seem the same. \u00a0Their moderators \u2014 Becky Quick, John Harwood, and Carl Quintanilla \u2014 were so obviously biased you would have thought it was a parody, if you hadn\u2019t known it was real, a kind of black comic nightmare out of a leftwing theatre of the absurd.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I thought that very thing as I was sitting at O&#8217;Gara&#8217;s watching the show last night; &#8220;this is like an SNL sketch&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>And there was this bit, that I didn&#8217;t catch last night; as part of the moderators&#8217; attempt to gut-shoot Rubio, the non-Trump front-runner, John Harwood doubled down on a lie he&#8217;d already apologized for:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But more than that, the debate revealed something I had thought about before, but never seen so clearly \u2014 how bias can affect the brain, almost make it dysfunctional. \u00a0I assume John Howard is an intelligent man. \u00a0He writes for the<em>\u00a0New York Times<\/em>. (Make of that what you will, but I did write for that newspaper myself once upon a time, so mind your manners.) \u00a0Nevertheless, Harwood did something extraordinary. \u00a0He lied about Rubio\u2019s tax plan in the exact same way not once but twice \u2014 once at the debate and once about two weeks <em>before<\/em> the debate. \u00a0What made it extraordinary was that Harwood had apologized for that same lie the first time on Twitter on October 14 and then lied again Wednesday night as if he didn\u2019t remember his own apology and correction. \u00a0 (<em>The Federalist<\/em> has the full story \u00a0with the tweet \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2015\/10\/28\/surprise-john-harwood-lied-about-marco-rubios-tax-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\">Surprise!
