{"id":5556,"date":"2009-10-15T12:00:14","date_gmt":"2009-10-15T17:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=5556"},"modified":"2010-07-07T20:08:36","modified_gmt":"2010-07-08T01:08:36","slug":"the-tears-of-a-failed-gubernatorial-bid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=5556","title":{"rendered":"Squib"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A month ago, Chris Coleman &#8211; mayor of Saint Paul &#8211; was on a roll.\u00a0 He was simultaneously running his 2009 mayoral campaign and a 2010 gubernatorial bid.<\/p>\n<p>And then &#8211; he stopped.\u00a0 He <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&#038;source=web&#038;ct=res&#038;cd=1&#038;ved=0CA0QFjAA&#038;url=http%3A%2F%2Fminnesota.publicradio.org%2Fdisplay%2Fweb%2F2009%2F10%2F08%2Fchriscoleman%2F&#038;ei=mxjXStbVCsua8Aa3rKjXCA&#038;usg=AFQjCNEnFhLFzIb_q1tongokWbX327Wl7Q&#038;sig2=38_GzYeX1Bv7VM3BKZEWeA\">abruptly ended<\/a> his goober bid five days ago.<\/p>\n<p>Why?\u00a0 In the horde of candidates stampeding for the bid at present, he&#8217;s certainly not the longest shot.<\/p>\n<p>And yet he became the first to bail.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>Because <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saintpaulrepublicans.us\/?p=142\">he&#8217;s nervous?<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>What happened to put a stop to all the DFL schmooze parties where Coleman and his gubernatorial competitors have been lining up to schmooze all the prospective DFL delegates and voters?Could it have anything to do with the fact that the one, lone candidate forum between Coleman and his opponent, Eva Ng, took place about 48 hours before on Tuesday October 6th- and that Eva Ng mopped the floor with Chris Coleman?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Answer after answer, Eva Ng answered with specifics; I will freeze property taxes at their current level and then I will cut them, I will set up business zones downtown to spur entrepreneurial growth, I will hold weekly ward meetings where citizens can speak with me as their mayor and their concerns WILL be addressed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Chris Coleman\u2019s answers?<\/p>\n<p>Chris Coleman has been in politics long enough (Ward 2 City Councilman for 2 terms, \u201997-\u201903) to know you NEVER have to answer the question which you\u2019re asked, and in his case, maybe it\u2019s better in a way that he didn\u2019t.   Then he would have had to talk about his property tax increases over the last 3 years in office- 9% in \u201907, 15.1% in 08, 8.6% in \u201909 and a proposed increase of 6% for \u201810, as well as fee increases. Oy!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m not going to say &#8220;he&#8217;s scared of losing&#8221;.\u00a0 But Ng, by all rational accounts, trussed Coleman up like a\u00a0 hog at the &#8220;Forum&#8221; (not a debate) and parted out the roast, ham and bacon.\u00a0 She didn&#8217;t beat him, she <em>crushed, stomped and napalmed him<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>And the DFL smear machine is out in force.\u00a0 And as Mike Huckabee said, in perhaps his greatest contribution to American politics, &#8220;when you&#8217;re taking flak, you&#8217;re over the target&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Can Eva Ng win this thing?\u00a0 Maybe.\u00a0 If <em>every single Republican <\/em>in Saint Paul turns out.\u00a0 And if each of them convinces a not-so-political neighbor that Chris Coleman and an all-DFL City Council is a screeching disaster, and that the Saint Paul School board has been so derelict in its duties that it deserves to be perp-walked out of 360 Colborne under a hail of spitballs?<\/p>\n<p>Why, yes.\u00a0 Yes, she can.<\/p>\n<p>And I can&#8217;t think of a better reason that a DFL gubernatorial front-runner, or at least not-back-runner, would abruptly bail out on the race.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A month ago, Chris Coleman &#8211; mayor of Saint Paul &#8211; was on a roll.\u00a0 He was simultaneously running his 2009 mayoral campaign and a 2010 gubernatorial bid.
