The Minnesota State Bar Association was started as a trade association to protect and enhance lawyers making a living.\u00a0 Lawyers pay MSBA a fee to advertise themselves as \u201cCertified Specialist\u201d in certain areas of law.\u00a0 The bar association collects so much from that program, people are asking why we\u2019re sitting on a pile of money.\u00a0 The technical answer is \u201cwhen the present glut of Baby Boomer specialists retires, we\u2019ll need the money to fund the program\u201d but that cuts no mustard with the More Money For Poor People crowd, they always have their hands out.<\/p>\n
So MSBA is spending the surplus on vouchers for classes \u2013 not all of them, only the classes some staffer decides are worthy.\u00a0 The logic is: we overcharged you in the parent company, so we\u2019re giving you a voucher to take select classes from our daughter company, not free but at a discount.\u00a0 Isn\u2019t that great?<\/p>\n
The one idea that never occurs to anybody is \u201cGive the money back.\u201d\u00a0 Or even \u201ccut the fee going forward.\u201d\u00a0 No, they\u2019re keeping the overbilling, maintaining the overpricing, and dribbling out coupons. \u00a0Typical Liberal thinking: all money belongs to us.\u00a0 If any other corporation did it, the class action lawyers would be all over them.<\/p>\n
And yet, they can\u2019t figure out why half the lawyers in the state don\u2019t belong to the Liberal Lawyer\u2019s club.<\/p>\n
