{"id":5380,"date":"2009-09-09T12:00:16","date_gmt":"2009-09-09T17:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=5380"},"modified":"2009-09-09T12:00:16","modified_gmt":"2009-09-09T17:00:16","slug":"golden-gatekeeping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=5380","title":{"rendered":"Golden Gatekeeping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The San Francisco Bay Bridge is closed while engineers fix a cracked &#8220;eyebar&#8221; &#8211; a structural member that transfers weight to the main supports.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s hopeing they do a good job of it.<\/p>\n<p>Or at least, let&#8217;s hope they do a better job than the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/capitolandcalifornia\/story\/2168843.html\">reporters who are writing about it<\/a>.\u00a0 Because since the 35W River Bridge collapsed, it seems <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=1624\">everyone<\/a> <\/em>is a structural engineer.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Eyebars are known to suffer from fatigue cracks.<\/p>\n<p>The same design was used in the Interstate 35 bridge in <a class=\" lingo_link lingo_link_hidden\" style=\"font-style: normal; display: inline; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; cursor: pointer; font-weight: 400\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.sacbee.com\/Minneapolis\/\" rel=\"nofollow\"><font color=\"#000000\">Minneapolis,<\/font><\/a> which collapsed in 2007 and killed five people.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Well, maybe in the same sense that both bridges had roads running over them.\u00a0 The 35W bridge was a conventional arch-truss bridge with, to the best of my knowledge, no eyebars; the Bay Bridge is a combination of trusses and a suspension bridge.\u00a0 Completely different structures.<\/p>\n<p>But other than <em>that<\/em>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>And while normally I&#8217;d point out that the collapse killed <em>thirteen <\/em>people, I&#8217;m assuming the other eight disappeared due to California&#8217;s taxing and spending.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The San Francisco Bay Bridge is closed while engineers fix a cracked &#8220;eyebar&#8221; &#8211; a structural member that transfers weight to the main supports.
