{"id":53406,"date":"2015-05-18T09:45:00","date_gmt":"2015-05-18T14:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=53406"},"modified":"2015-05-18T15:13:05","modified_gmt":"2015-05-18T20:13:05","slug":"make-my-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=53406","title":{"rendered":"Make My Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s the good news: over the weekend, an overwhelming, bipartisan majority of Republicans and Democrats, in both the House and Senate, voted for the public safety omnibus bill as finalized by the conference committee.<\/p>\n<p>How overwhelming was the majority?<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how overwhelming:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_3647.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_3647.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3647.JPG\" width=\"576\" height=\"576\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That is a veto proof majority in both the House and the DFL-controlled Senate.<\/p>\n<p>How important is this? This bill will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Abolish the capital felony trap \u2013 by recognizing that the Capitol police have instant access to the database of carry permit holders, just like every other cop in the state of Minnesota.<\/li>\n<li>Bar the governor for ordering the confiscation of firearms during emergencies. The governor of Minnesota has immense, wide-sweeping emergency powers, almost completely unregulated by law. This will prevent the situation that new Orleans residents ran into after Hurricane Katrina, with government officials and police going door-to-door to confiscate firearms, rendering citizens defenseless in the face of looters.<\/li>\n<li>Legalize the ownership of federally licensed suppressors \u2013 mufflers for guns.<\/li>\n<li>Allow Minnesotans to buy a long arms from non-contiguous states.<\/li>\n<li>Make Minnesota permits reciprocal with many more neighboring states. This is great if you, hypothetically, constantly wind up having to stop at gas stations in Moorhead or East Grand Forks, to avoid inadvertently becoming a felon in North Dakota. Again, hypothetically.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So that&#8217;s the good news.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Bad News<\/strong> \u2013 Governor <del>Flint- Smith<\/del> Dayton has said that he will veto the bill, over the suppressor provision.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the photo above \u2013 the votes for a bipartisan, vetoproof majority passing the bill \u2013 might give Governor <del>Flint-Smith<\/del> Dayton pause.
