{"id":53067,"date":"2015-04-29T06:00:27","date_gmt":"2015-04-29T11:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=53067"},"modified":"2015-04-28T07:01:28","modified_gmt":"2015-04-28T12:01:28","slug":"a-thought-experiment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=53067","title":{"rendered":"A Thought Experiment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>National Public Radio, as part of its mission to help half the country feel it&#8217;s smarter than the other half, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/thetwo-way\/2014\/02\/14\/277058739\/1-in-4-americans-think-the-sun-goes-around-the-earth-survey-says\">published this &#8220;Study&#8221; from the National Science Foundation<\/a> earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>Among its (not especially dramatic) &#8220;findings&#8221; (I&#8217;m going to add a bit of emphasis):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-style: italic;\">A quarter of Americans surveyed could not <strong>correctly<\/strong> answer that the Earth revolves around the sun and not the other way around, according to a report out Friday from the National Science Foundation.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-style: italic;\">..<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-style: italic;\">To the question &#8220;Does the Earth go around the Sun, or does the Sun go around the Earth,&#8221; 26 percent of those surveyed answered incorrectly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the same survey, just 39 percent answered <strong>correctly\u00a0<\/strong><strong>(true)<\/strong> that &#8220;The universe began with a huge explosion&#8221; and only 48 percent said &#8220;Human beings, as we know them today, developed from earlier species of animals.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s kind of funny that NPR is so confident in its own audience&#8217;s vaunted intelligence that it had to subtly point out which answers were correct.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand&#8230;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Just over half understood that antibiotics are not effective against viruses.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m amazed that Americans did that\u00a0well on what is, in day to day life, rather more important.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s an indictment of the American education system, isn&#8217;t it? \u00a0Wait &#8211; maybe not:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As alarming as some of those deficits in science knowledge might appear, Americans fared better on several of the questions than similar, but older surveys of their Chinese and European counterparts.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Didn&#8217;t see that coming, didja?<\/p>\n<div data-reactid=\".z.1:3:1:$comment10206272873571467_10206273038095580:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0\">This &#8220;study&#8221; is a pet peeve of mine. Again, so what?
