A key criterion in measuring success will be the delivery of \u201cimpact stories\u201d that inspire <span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1250081987_4\">public debate<\/span> and advance the common good.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This must be good news for Republicans; in the wake of the Obama onslaught, the &#8220;Independent&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=3630\">laid off most of its staff and whacked its freelance budget<\/a>, causing former editor Steve Perry to be shocked, shocked that the whole operation was a propaganda operation.<\/p>\n<p>If the <em>Mindy&#8217;s <\/em>usualy cast of donors feel the need to crank up the propaganda war, we must be drawing rhetorical blood&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the funny part (emphasis added):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Minnesota Independent is part of a growing online network sponsored by the non-profit and <strong>non-partisan <\/strong><span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1250081987_5\">Center for Independent Media<\/span>,<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Non-partisan?<\/p>\n<p>This quote from Britt Robson, after he got laid off in the CIM&#8217;s &#8220;Mission Accomplished&#8221; celebration:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Robson \u2014 who writes about arts for MinnPost and sports for The Rake \u2014 was caustic in his view [of] MnIndy\u2019s Capitol overlords. He says <strong>CIM\u2019s national staff was less interested in the organization\u2019s professed <\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/newjournalist.org\/about\/\"><strong>mission<\/strong><\/a><strong> \u2014 \u201ca<\/strong><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"><strong> nonpartisan nonprofit organization that operates an independent online news network in the public interest\u201d\u00a0\u2014 than boosting the party of Barack Obama<\/strong>.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI was working with them fairly closely during the Republican convention and privy to interoffice emails,\u201d Robson explains. \u201cThe type of things non-local editors were into were very party-race stories, particularly stories that embarrassed Republicans and promoted Democrats.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Paul Schmelzer &#8211; you&#8217;re a good writer.\u00a0 You&#8217;re a reporter with some integrity.\u00a0 Why on earth are you maintaining the fiction of non-partisanship?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>which adheres to the Society for Professional Journalists (SPJ) <span style=\"background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%; cursor: pointer; -moz-background-clip: border; -moz-background-origin: padding; -moz-background-inline-policy: continuous\" class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1250081987_6\">code of ethics<\/span>&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Obvious jokes redacted for excessive obviousness.<\/p>\n<p>Hey, maybe Perry can come back now!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Someone emailed me this job posting: The Minnesota Independent is seeking freelance reporter\/bloggers to help cover politics at the state, county and local levels.
