The left understands, and wages without mercy, the war for the language.<\/p>\n<p>And for the most part, the media reflects the left&#8217;s view of how language portrays things.<\/p>\n<p>So it&#8217;s been interesting watching the media coverage of the raft of Gun Rights bills. \u00a0In a Twin Cities media that will refers to using ones&#8217; carry permit as &#8220;packing heat&#8221; so frequently it&#8217;s beyond satirizable, there&#8217;ve been some improvements.<\/p>\n<p>This past few weeks, a bill that would allow Minnesotans to join 39 other states in owning mufflers for their guns has been advancing though committee.<\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s been interesting reading the headlines that local news organizations having been using for the story (in this case taken from online coverage); do they refer to gun mufflers with techical accuracy as &#8220;suppressors&#8221;, or with conspiratorial, theatrical scaremongering as &#8220;silencers&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some examples, with emphasis added by me:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Strib: \u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0CCAQqQIwAA&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.startribune.com%2Fpolitics%2Fstatelocal%2F296127611.html&amp;ei=b4IFVfj2LsiqNv_CgcAI&amp;usg=AFQjCNH-lHVwPWsTr04D7lbDWnBqqqMU3Q&amp;sig2=2okpu-ANGar_PMVhAM832w&amp;bvm=bv.88198703,d.eXY\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/politics\/statelocal\/296127611.html\">Bill would allow <strong>suppressors<\/strong>, or <strong>silencers<\/strong> on guns in Minnesota<\/a>&#8221; &#8211; the Strib chooses both!<\/li>\n<li>The Strib: &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=5&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0CC8QFjAE&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.startribune.com%2Fpolitics%2Fstatelocal%2F296160971.html&amp;ei=b4IFVfj2LsiqNv_CgcAI&amp;usg=AFQjCNHlc7WTHQpw4IPO92bzpmtgy7ytpw&amp;sig2=W5WhqM7S4ncLFf0775Ikaw&amp;bvm=bv.88198703,d.eXY\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/politics\/statelocal\/296160971.html\">Minnesota House panel backs legalizing firearm &#8216;<strong>silencers<\/strong>&#8216; &#8230;<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; The used the theatrical &#8220;silencer&#8221; &#8211; but put it in irony quotes. \u00a0They also used the term &#8220;suppressor&#8221; in the body of the story, indicating that on an editorial level they know how misleading the term &#8220;silencer&#8221; is.<\/li>\n<li>Rick Kupchella&#8217;s &#8220;Bring Me The News&#8221;: \u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=3&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0CCQQqQIwAg&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fbringmethenews.com%2F2015%2F03%2F13%2Fhouse-panel-oks-legalizing-gun-suppressors-but-dayton-dflers-a-tough-sell%2F&amp;ei=b4IFVfj2LsiqNv_CgcAI&amp;usg=AFQjCNF5ZUyr7QNR4ATmIfouOvaaPmhWrg&amp;sig2=dJKq6rCcGhYZYdITyiM97w&amp;bvm=bv.88198703,d.eXY\" data-href=\"http:\/\/bringmethenews.com\/2015\/03\/13\/house-panel-oks-legalizing-gun-suppressors-but-dayton-dflers-a-tough-sell\/\">House committee OKs legalizing gun <strong>suppressors<\/strong> \u2013 but Dayton, DFLers a tough sell<\/a>&#8221; &#8211; Kupchella&#8217;s organization is\u00a0<em>generally\u00a0<\/em>good.<\/li>\n<li>KARE11: \u00a0&#8220;<a style=\"text-transform: capitalize;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=4&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0CCgQFjAD&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.kare11.com%2Fstory%2Fnews%2Fpolitics%2F2015%2F03%2F12%2Fgun-sound-suppressor-bill-moves-ahead-at-capitol%2F70243166%2F&amp;ei=b4IFVfj2LsiqNv_CgcAI&amp;usg=AFQjCNG81USxb6OaifDEeZrP1C9WWNZQlg&amp;sig2=szaFhG8o_XY2Pjb5ESWvOw&amp;bvm=bv.88198703,d.eXY\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.kare11.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2015\/03\/12\/gun-sound-suppressor-bill-moves-ahead-at-capitol\/70243166\/\"><strong>Gun sound suppressor<\/strong> bill moves ahead at Capitol &#8211; Kare 11<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; The Kare Bears go ultra-technical! \u00a0 Gun Sound Suppressor is literally the most accurate, dispassionate term of the bunch.<\/li>\n<li>Fox29: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=7&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0CDwQFjAG&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myfoxtwincities.com%2Fstory%2F28405781%2Fone-day-gun-day-at-minnesota-capitol-could-go-until-midnight&amp;ei=b4IFVfj2LsiqNv_CgcAI&amp;usg=AFQjCNEDIIkmpNlxlFj-npF71WlcMS0aLA&amp;sig2=8WVbXSDOi2xEzZuxgMS75w&amp;bvm=bv.88198703,d.eXY\">Legislature advances bill to legalize <strong>silencers<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Bad headline? \u00a0Reporter Tim Blotz offhandedly notes the difference, and uses &#8220;Suppressor&#8221; for the most part throughout his coverage &#8211; although anchor Jeff Passolt&#8217;s teleprompter copy used &#8220;silencer&#8221;. \u00a0 \u00a0Points for accuracy to Blotz. \u00a0One taken away for carrying Heather Martens&#8217; testimony.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So minor kudos to the Twin Cities media; at least as re the very basics of language, you&#8217;re coming around ever so slightly.<\/p>\n<p>Now, if we could do something about using the term &#8220;packing heat&#8221;, like, ever&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Winning the battle for the English Language is always a challenge when you&#8217;re a conservative.
