{"id":51057,"date":"2015-02-03T12:00:03","date_gmt":"2015-02-03T18:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=51057"},"modified":"2015-02-03T06:34:22","modified_gmt":"2015-02-03T12:34:22","slug":"going-on-the-offensive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=51057","title":{"rendered":"Going On The Offensive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been a busy couple of years for Real Minnesotans (and Real Americans) [1].<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve had an anti-gun president for six years, and we spent two years with a completely DFL government &#8211; and the DFL <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snowbizz.com\/HWRepublican\/dfl_Platform.htm\">platform<\/a> calls for restricting guns in the hands of the law-abiding (&#8220;Reasonable gun control that promotes public safety and crime prevention&#8221;). \u00a0They were energized by the Sandy Hook massacre and, moreso, hundreds of thousands of dollars of Michael Bloomberg&#8217;s money.<\/p>\n<p>And it all came to nought, due to the efforts of Minnesota&#8217;s pro-Second-Amendment grass roots, especially the Gun Owners Civil Rights Alliance and the Minnesota Gun Owners PAC.<\/p>\n<p>Now, we have a GOP majority in the State House &#8211; including several members elected with direct support of Real Minnesota &#8211; and a Senate DFL majority that has many significant pro-gun members.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s time to go on the offensive.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s precisely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/notes\/minnesota-gun-owners-civil-rights-alliance\/2015-legislative-priorities\/10153541726957542\">the agenda that GOCRA announced on Monday<\/a>. \u00a0Here are the highlights:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Right to Keep and Bear Arms Amendment to the Minnesota Constitution<\/strong> &#8211; I wasn&#8217;t aware that the human right of self-defense wasn&#8217;t in the Minnesota Constitution. \u00a0Notwithstanding the fact that <em>McDonald v. Chicago\u00a0<\/em>incorporated the Second Amendment onto the states, it&#8217;s high time our constitution said so too.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Ban &#8220;Emergency&#8221; Orders for Gun Confiscation<\/strong> &#8211; Minnesotans are expected to trust to the integrity of the cops. \u00a0But New Orleans residents found that that trust was misplaced in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, as cops went door to door confiscating firearms from law-abiding citizens. \u00a0This needs to be explicitly banned under Minnesota law.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Legalize Firearm Suppressors<\/strong> &#8211; Forget what you see in the movies; they don&#8217;t &#8220;silence&#8221; firearms, and they&#8217;re not a tool of assassins. \u00a0They&#8217;re like a muffler for your firearm, just like the one you&#8217;re legally required to put on your car, preventing harmful levels of noise from damaging peoples&#8217; hearing.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Constitutional Carry<\/strong> &#8211; The law-abiding citizen doesn&#8217;t have to jump through hoops to exercise their right to speak, worship, publish or assemble or, theoretically, be secure in their homes and possessions (we&#8217;ll need to work on that, too). \u00a0Why should guns <em>logically\u00a0<\/em>be different?<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Stop Police Departments from Delaying Purchase Permits<\/strong> &#8211; Some police departments exercise passive-aggressive liberties in issuing &#8220;permits to purchase&#8221; firearms. \u00a0This needs to be addressed.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Remove Redundant Capitol Complex Carry Notification<\/strong> &#8211; Back in the 1990s, when the state didnt&#8217; have computers for most of its record-keeping, and carry permits were typed out on Selectrics at your local police station, the current law &#8211; you must notify the head of Capitol Security to carry in the Capitol complex, including the History Center &#8211; made sense, sort of. \u00a0Today, when Capitol Security has access to permit information in real time, it does not &#8211; except as a felony trap. \u00a0Time to fix it.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Self Defense Law Reform<\/strong> &#8211; Minnesota self-defense law is fairly simple in statute &#8211; but quite complex in its case law. \u00a0There are a lot of hidden &#8220;gotchas&#8221; in self-defense, that can put a law-abiding citizen in jail even though they behaved objectively correctly. \u00a0Law with &#8220;gotchas&#8221; is bad law. \u00a0It&#8217;s time to fix it. \u00a0This is actually the most important one, in my book.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>If you&#8217;re not a GOCRA member, you should be. \u00a0Every activist in a maroon shirt makes the impression on our legislature &#8211; already huge and impressive -that much bigger.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[1] Minnesotans\/Americans who believe all ten amendments of the Bill of Rights are rights\u00a0<em>of the people<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been a busy couple of years for Real Minnesotans (and Real Americans) [1].
