{"id":50913,"date":"2015-01-26T06:25:08","date_gmt":"2015-01-26T12:25:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=50913"},"modified":"2015-01-26T06:58:37","modified_gmt":"2015-01-26T12:58:37","slug":"europes-misbegotten-cousin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=50913","title":{"rendered":"Europe&#8217;s Misbegotten Cousin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Greece appears to be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/syriza-poised-for-victory-in-greek-election-1422168982?mod=WSJ_hp_LEFTTopStories\">on the brink of electing a far-left government<\/a> which is promising its voters and end to the &#8220;austerity&#8221; that the incumbent center-right (by Greek standards; it&#8217;d still be to the left of the DFL) government imposed after the Greek economy, driven by decades of suffocating goverment spending that drove the government into crippling debt, crashed.<\/p>\n<p>Greece currently has nearly 30% unemployment; it&#8217;s nearly 50% among younger people. And it was rescued from &#8220;worse&#8221; only by a\u00a0<em>massive\u00a0<\/em>bailout from the parts of Europe that work &#8211; mainly center-right Germany.<\/p>\n<p>And now, their response seems to be to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/topics\/world\/will-greek-voters-make-great-leap\">tell the Germans &#8220;screw you, give us more money&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the piece from NPR&#8217;s &#8220;Marketplace&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/node\/149785\/player\/storyplayer\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"100%\" height=\"240px\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Listen to the Greek government &#8220;economic advisor&#8221;, Janos Milios (at around 4:42 on the audio):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Europe is a continent of democracy. \u00a0When the people of one country decide to change course, change policy, this is something that has to be respected by all parties&#8221;.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Respected? \u00a0If they&#8217;re paying their own bills and not surviving by pilfering the the wallets of the responsible countries, maybe.<\/p>\n<p>This pretty much embodied the old criticism of democracy; &#8220;it can only survive until 51% of the people discover they can live off the other 49%&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>But the worst, most noxious quote is yet to come. \u00a0Among the left&#8217;s most bilious conceits is that society is a &#8220;family&#8221; &#8211; with, naturally, government serving as a gender-neutral parent to keep all the unruly kids in line.<\/p>\n<p>That was the line taken by Dimitrius Papadimitriotis, an Athens psychiatrist (at around \u00a03:30):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We believe it has to be shared among our European partners. \u00a0Being part of the &#8220;European Family&#8221; means taking care of each other, being there for each other. \u00a0And this is what &#8220;family&#8221; is all about.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Government &#8211; least of all extranational associations of governments &#8211; is not a &#8220;family&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>And if it were, then it&#8217;d be time to take the snotty spendthrift teenager to the garage and have a word with her about nagging mom and dad to pay off her credit card debts.<\/p>\n<p>If I were a German taxpayer, I&#8217;d be demanding my government cut the Greeks off completely.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Greece appears to be on the brink of electing a far-left government which is promising its voters and end to the &#8220;austerity&#8221; that the incumbent center-right (by Greek standards; it&#8217;d still be to the left of the DFL) government imposed after the Greek economy, driven by decades of suffocating goverment spending that drove the government [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[51,11],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-50913","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-liberal-tyranny","category-world"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/50913","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=50913"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/50913\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":50920,"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/50913\/revisions\/50920"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=50913"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=50913"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=50913"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
