{"id":4862,"date":"2009-06-01T06:48:55","date_gmt":"2009-06-01T11:48:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=4862"},"modified":"2009-06-01T08:20:37","modified_gmt":"2009-06-01T13:20:37","slug":"what-have-you-done-for-us-lately","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=4862","title":{"rendered":"What Have You Done For Us Lately?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Let&#8217;s go through Sonia Sotomayor&#8217;s purported qualifications for being on the Supreme Court:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>She grew up in a Bronx public housing project without a father<\/strong>: Well, that&#8217;s interesting, but hardly unique, and not much of a qualification in and of itself for anything, now, is it?\u00a0 If the point is &#8220;she rose above all that&#8221; &#8211; again, good.\u00a0 She set a great example.\u00a0 Cue the applause.\u00a0 But again, it&#8217;s hardly unique, even on the Supreme Court.<\/li>\n<li><strong>She graduated summa cum laude from Princeton<\/strong>: Which shows that she played the paper chase from an early age.\u00a0 A perfectly fine thing &#8211; but the only thing it really tells us about her, or anyone, is that she had a jones for getting grades early in life.\u00a0 Which is fine, but again, merely a sign of what she was like in her late teens and early twenties.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Edited the Yale Law Review<\/strong>: This is one of those things that makes lawyers all tingly.\u00a0 It means she could write and edit coherently and brown-nose fluently, as near as I can tell. What does it mean to one&#8217;s skill as a <em>jurist<\/em>, as opposed to &#8220;law student?&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>First Latina appointed to a Federal court in New York<\/strong>: So are we to believe that being Hispanic is an obstacle when combined with being a Yale Law grad?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bipartisan Support!\u00a0 Appointed by Bush I, promoted by Clinton!: <\/strong>Well, that&#8217;s half right.\u00a0 George HW Bush may have been a Republican, but he was no conservative.
