{"id":48568,"date":"2014-10-27T07:00:48","date_gmt":"2014-10-27T12:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=48568"},"modified":"2014-10-24T11:32:24","modified_gmt":"2014-10-24T16:32:24","slug":"whose-time-has-come-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=48568","title":{"rendered":"Whose Time Has Come"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was fifty years ago today that Ronald Reagan gave one of the most important speeches in American history, and perhaps the most important speech in the history of American conservatism:\u00a0 <em>A Time For Choosing<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s more vital now than it was, even then.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You and I are told increasingly we have to choose between a left or right. Well, I\u2019d like to suggest there is no such thing as a left or right. There\u2019s only an up or down: man\u2019s old, old-aged dream, the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order, or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here it is, in its entirety.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Fi3x7mmywDE\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s impossible to overstate this speech&#8217;s importance.\u00a0 It was the opening salvo in the rebirth of conservatism.\u00a0 It took a decade for its aftereffects to be\u00a0 known; George Will wrote in 1984 that it won the Presidency for Goldwater &#8211; it just took 16 years to count the votes.<\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s a hot, blazing rebuke for the mental midgets to claim the GOP has &#8220;become more extreme&#8221; lately.\u00a0 Listen to the whole thing.\u00a0 There is nothing the Tea Party stands behind that wasn&#8217;t stated in this speech.<\/p>\n<p>It also\u00a0destroys the even dimmer claim that &#8220;Reagan was too moderate for today&#8217;s GOP&#8221;.\u00a0 If only today&#8217;s GOP &#8211; outside the Tea Party, anyway &#8211; had the balls to live up to the standards in this speech.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In retrospect, Reagan&#8217;s presidency &#8211; and it may be fairly said that this speech was the beginning of Reagan&#8217;s political career &#8211; bought this nation a few decades before the extended populist spending orgy that took off in the sixties finally brings this nation to its heels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Is there still time to change things?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps.\u00a0 But this is the real time for choosing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>HG<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was fifty years ago today that Ronald Reagan gave one of the most important speeches in American history, and perhaps the most important speech in the history of American conservatism:\u00a0 A Time For Choosing.
