{"id":46946,"date":"2014-09-04T09:13:41","date_gmt":"2014-09-04T14:13:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=46946"},"modified":"2014-12-12T10:30:25","modified_gmt":"2014-12-12T16:30:25","slug":"abm-wrong-about-minnesota","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=46946","title":{"rendered":"ABM:  Wrong About Minnesota"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I haven&#8217;t had the time to do as much in the way of digging into the DFL ad machine this cycle as in some past cycles.\u00a0 It&#8217;s been a crazy summer.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, Bill Glahn is on patrol<\/p>\n<p>Glahn <a href=\"http:\/\/billglahn.blogspot.com\/2014\/09\/alliance-for-better-minnesota-is-worried.html\">takes apart one of the latest flight of anti-Johnson ads <\/a>from the Alliance for a Better Minnesota &#8211; the attack PR firm <a title=\"Chanting Points Memo: Buying Minnesota With Daddy\u2019s Money\" href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=12083\">funded by liberal plutocrats <\/a>that has run toxic sleaze campaigns against every Republican to run for office in Minnesota in the past eight years or so.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>ABM&#8217;s ads have been punctilious about punching up the phrase &#8220;Tea Party&#8221; in their ads, especially about Johnson, this cycle &#8211; even though Johnson is <em>not <\/em>especially identified with the Tea Party.\u00a0 Glahn reaches one of the same observations I do:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Apparently the pejorative \u201cTea Party Republican\u201d must test particularly well with low information voters. Or, perhaps its use in the ad is a sign the Democrats are concerned about turning out their base in an off-year election.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Democrats have spent millions this past five years, trying to turn &#8220;Tea Party&#8221; into a pejorative.\u00a0 If you go by what you hear in the media, it&#8217;s worked. If you go by election and polling results in red and reddish-purple states, it hasn&#8217;t.\u00a0\u00a0 Minnesota?\u00a0 Well, the 2010 gubernatorial election showed Minnesota has 8,000 more low-information voters (along with Duplicate-Americans, Fictional-Americans and Deceased-Americans) than smart ones.\u00a0 It might be a winning strategy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It might also show that that&#8217;s the best they can do; sputtering &#8220;Tea Partier&#8221; may be the &#8220;lowest blow&#8221; they think they can come up with.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Anyway &#8211; the ad.\u00a0 Like everything ABM puts out, it&#8217;s got an assortment of outright lies, and factoids stretched so far out of context as to be devoid of truth:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ms. Livermore [a &#8220;classroom teacher&#8221;]\u00a0makes the dubious claim that Johnson \u201ccut education by over $500 million\u201d back in 2003, and then gave that money to corporations in 2005. Keep in mind that a similar ABM ad was <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.mprnews.org\/capitol-view\/2014\/08\/poligraph-abms-johnson-ad-stretches-truth\">judged \u201cMisleading\u201d by Minnesota Public Radio <\/a>(of all places) for making those exact same claims. [The bill Johnson voted for in 2003 actually increased (rather than cut) public school spending.]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As always with ABM, though,\u00a0there&#8217;s a level of stuff they <em>don&#8217;t <\/em>tell the voter (emphasis added):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>No, the real lie in the ad comes from the \u201cappeal to authority\u201d of having an ordinary \u201cclassroom teacher\u201d attack Johnson\u2019s education policy. According to her LinkedIn profile, Ms. Livermore served on the governing board of the teachers\u2019 union Education Minnesota from 2004 to 2007. [By the way, she spells the word \u201ceducation\u201d incorrectly on her profile.]<\/p>\n<p>Although her service to the state teachers\u2019 union may have given her some familiarity with decade-ago state legislation, it doesn\u2019t exactly qualify her as a garden-variety \u201cclassroom teacher.\u201d \u201cFormer union official attacks Republican,\u201d just doesn\u2019t have the same ring. Funny thing, the viewer is never informed of Livermore\u2019s connection to the union, who happens to be the largest donor to Democrat campaigns in the state. \u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And to be fair to ABM, why <em>should <\/em>the viewer be informed of this?\u00a0 The campaign isn&#8217;t about informing voters.\u00a0 It&#8217;s about framing the opposition, just like Saul Alinksky taught them to.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I haven&#8217;t had the time to do as much in the way of digging into the DFL ad machine this cycle as in some past cycles.\u00a0 It&#8217;s been a crazy summer.
