{"id":4690,"date":"2009-06-08T12:02:20","date_gmt":"2009-06-08T17:02:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=4690"},"modified":"2012-03-16T21:10:14","modified_gmt":"2012-03-17T02:10:14","slug":"things-im-supposed-to-love-but-cant-stand-the-simpsons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=4690","title":{"rendered":"Things I&#8217;m Supposed To Love, But Can&#8217;t Stand: <i>The Simpsons<\/i>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yeah, yeah, I know &#8211; funny show, groundbreaking comedy, yadda yadda.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/weblogs.newsday.com\/entertainment\/tv\/blog\/the-simpsons.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Look, don&#8217;t get me wrong; I like <em>The Simpsons<\/em>.\u00a0 I liked <em>Life In Hell<\/em>, the\u00a0 comic that brought creator Matt Groening to scuzzy, underground prominence in the eighties.\u00a0 I liked <em>The Tracy Ullman Show<\/em>, on which <em>The Simpsons <\/em>started as a series of interstitial shorts.\u00a0 I even enjoy watching the show, usually (except for the last five or ten years, when the show hasn&#8217;t been nearly as good as the first ten or fifteen years, or whatever).<\/p>\n<p>No, it&#8217;s not <em>The Simpsons<\/em> I dislike, per se.<\/p>\n<p>But <em>The Simpsons<\/em> are a lot like <em>Star Trek<\/em>; it&#8217;s not\u00a0 the show itself that bugs me.\u00a0 It&#8217;s the fans.<\/p>\n<p>Over-the-top <em>Simpsons <\/em>buffs &#8211; the people who sneak show references into the most mundane bits and pieces of everyday life, who sit around cafeterias and trade show trivia for day after day, who answer serious questions with vaguely-appropriate Homer quotes &#8211; remind me of <em>Star Trek <\/em>fans, the kind that&#8217;ve adopted &#8220;Gene Roddenberry&#8221; as their worldview and live the creed in their daily lives.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re just like the Comic Store Guy&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;oh, crap.\u00a0 Now I&#8217;ve done it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yeah, yeah, I know &#8211; funny show, groundbreaking comedy, yadda yadda.
