{"id":46735,"date":"2014-08-27T12:00:11","date_gmt":"2014-08-27T17:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=46735"},"modified":"2014-08-28T11:50:37","modified_gmt":"2014-08-28T16:50:37","slug":"pondering-the-imponderable-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=46735","title":{"rendered":"Pondering The Imponderable"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was at a comedy club a few weeks back.<\/p>\n<p>A very angry \u2013 and not especially funny, while we&#8217;re on the subject \u2013 woman who, I kid you not, identified herself as having been a political science major, told a joke (I&#8217;ll be generous) about &#8220;science&#8221;.\u00a0 She ended with something like &#8220;That&#8217;s called &#8216;science&#8217;.\u00a0 Take <em>that<\/em>, creationists!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But it started me thinking about the contempt that the left feels for creationists.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, I&#8217;m not one of them &#8211; if you read the biblical creation story as allegory, there is no conflict between the Bible and the record that is captured in the physical science of the world around us.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And I wanted to stand up and ask the &#8220;comedian&#8221; something.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So if we have to choose between&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Someone who believes the Earth is 6,000 years old<\/strong>, and lives their life accordingly &#8211; whatever that means?\u00a0 A belief for which\u00a0there may be\u00a0little empirical basis, and even less empirical impact outside the faith community?\u00a0 Or&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Someone who\u00a0believes<\/strong> that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>raising taxes during a recession helps the economy,<\/li>\n<li>banning firearms for the law-abiding lowers violent crime<\/li>\n<li>jacking up regulation on market economies will stop the climate from changing like it&#8217;s been doing for between 6,000 and 20,000,000,000 years<\/li>\n<li>Unionizing daycare providers will alleviate the scarcity of daycare<\/li>\n<li>Raising the minimum wage will alleviate poverty<\/li>\n<li>Pouring a bottomless bucket of money into Public Education will <em>ever <\/em>give us a better-educated populace<\/li>\n<li>Mandating increased healthcare services without increasing the supply of caregivers won&#8217;t raise the price of healthcare<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Racism&#8221; is harming black Americans more than the Public Education system, a toxic &#8220;urban culture&#8221;, fatherless families and voting for Democrats who want to keep them that way are<\/li>\n<li>Giving terrorists a &#8220;save the date&#8221; card for leaving one of their homelands isn&#8217;t going to result in an epic surge of bloodshed<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Anti-Poverty&#8221; programs have alleviated poverty over the past fifty years<\/li>\n<li>Barack Obama deserved that Nobel Peace Prize,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8230;which does more actual harm to the world?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It wouldn&#8217;t have made a great &#8220;heckle&#8221;, unfortunately.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was at a comedy club a few weeks back.
