Childcare is hard to find in Minnesota – a state where daycare costs are already among the highest in the nation, per-capita.<\/p>\n

And it’s even harder in Greater Minnesota<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Eight months before her due date, Angie Steinbach started calling day cares to reserve a spot for her baby.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nobody had an opening as far as Marshall or Willmar \u2014 both a 45-minute drive away. Steinbach got on waiting lists \u201cbehind people who hadn\u2019t even conceived yet,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

When Steinbach\u2019s boy was born, her husband \u2014 who had just earned a degree in computers \u2014 planned to stay home with their son. The couple didn\u2019t find a way for them both to work until a relative tipped them to an opening at a child care in Granite Falls.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou just don\u2019t realize until you actually experience it firsthand just how bad the shortage is,\u201d said Steinbach, community development director for the city of Montevideo.<\/span><\/p>\n

Large parts of rural Minnesota don\u2019t have enough child care for working families. Finding a place for newborns is especially difficult.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
