{"id":44422,"date":"2014-05-30T12:30:28","date_gmt":"2014-05-30T17:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=44422"},"modified":"2014-05-30T07:04:44","modified_gmt":"2014-05-30T12:04:44","slug":"things-im-supposed-to-hate-but-kinda-like-alanis-morrisette","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=44422","title":{"rendered":"Things I&#8217;m Supposed To Hate But Kinda Like: Alanis Morrisette"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yeah, I know &#8211; she was the &#8220;woman who rawks&#8221;-du-jour about this time twenty years ago.\u00a0 She was the Annette Funicello of the Grunge generation &#8211; or as a rock critic dubbed her, the &#8220;Queen of <a title=\"Alt-rock\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alt-rock\">alt-rock<\/a> angst&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>And I hate angst.<\/p>\n<p>Well&#8230;<em>other\u00a0<\/em>peoples&#8217; angst. \u00a0Mostly. \u00a0Not so much my own.<\/p>\n<p>But I digress.<\/p>\n<p>And her musical heyday was, to be blunt, not my own. \u00a0I&#8217;d just gotten out of a couple of years of working in bars, and was pretty much tired of music everyone else liked, and had three kids to take care of instead of listening to music. \u00a0So when my stepson brought home a copy of\u00a0<em>Jagged Little Pill<\/em>, I pretty much disliked it even before I heard it.<\/p>\n<p>But seeing that she&#8217;s turning 40 (!) on Sunday, I figured it&#8217;d be\u00a0a good time to unpack this particular love-hate relationship.<\/p>\n<p>She tends toward the shrill &#8211; but it&#8217;s a really intense kind of shrill, one that wears me out. \u00a0 \u00a0There are times it seems like she does the same half-dozen songs forty different ways.<\/p>\n<p>But every once in a while she writes a song I wish I could have written myself:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8Wlhw_HJLts\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>And in her day &#8211; I discovered right <em>after<\/em> her day &#8211; she had one of the best touring bands in the business, which took what could &#8211; should &#8211; have been a live train wreck suitable only for women&#8217;s studies classes and feminist coffee shops and turned it into some damned fine, solid, in-tune-and-on-beat, <em>tight<\/em>\u00a0performances:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TS3oLs1JF50\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s Taylor Hawkins on drums &#8211; currently with the Foo Fighters, and likely the best drummer to come out of the alt-rock genre. The bass player? Chris Chaney, one of the most underrated bass players around (and wasting away in the current incarnation of Jane&#8217;s Addiction). \u00a0And a couple of guitar players, including a guy with a Fender Jaguar, which was very\u00a0<em>au courant\u00a0<\/em>in Seattle in the nineties, and not a bad instrument if you couldn&#8217;t handle a Jazzmaster.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway &#8211; I know it&#8217;s wrong. \u00a0But them&#8217;s the facts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yeah, I know &#8211; she was the &#8220;woman who rawks&#8221;-du-jour about this time twenty years ago.\u00a0 She was the Annette Funicello of the Grunge generation &#8211; or as a rock critic dubbed her, the &#8220;Queen of alt-rock angst&#8221;.
