If it means \u201call White men automatically succeed\u201d it\u2019s plainly wrong: see all the White men who don\u2019t succeed.<\/p>\n
If it means \u201call White men have a leg up and that helps them succeed\u201d it\u2019s plainly wrong: see above, and also see successful non-Whites.<\/p>\n
If it means \u201csome White men have a leg up, depending on their birth order, intelligence, athletic ability, parents\u2019 finances, or other factors\u201d it\u2019s so broad as to be useless as an analytical tool to measure societal bias as a component of success.<\/p>\n
A phrase that has no set meaning is useless, except for shutting down conversation.\u00a0 \u201cCheck Your Privilege\u201d implies that as a White man, I enjoyed privileges that others did not.\u00a0 That means I didn\u2019t earn my success, it was handed to me.\u00a0 As the beneficiary of largess distributed solely by skin color and not by individual effort, I lack the moral authority to tell others how to live their lives to succeed.\u00a0 It\u2019s akin to \u201cYou didn\u2019t build that\u201d with the same implied insult.<\/p>\n
In other words, \u201cCheck Your Privilege\u201d means \u201cShut Up, Honky\u201d which ends the conversation and destroys the opportunity for learning.<\/p>\n
The worst part?\u00a0 We\u00a0should<\/strong>\u00a0engage in self-examination, for our own good. \u201cThere, but for the grace of God, go I\u201d is an acknowledgment that we all have a leg up on somebody and it\u2019s generally nothing we earned, it\u2019s some advantage we were given by God.<\/p>\nAborting my endeavor to understand my place in the universe by shaming me for what I can\u2019t control \u2013 my skin color \u2013 is perverse.<\/p>\n
