{"id":42648,"date":"2014-03-25T05:18:34","date_gmt":"2014-03-25T10:18:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=42648"},"modified":"2014-03-25T05:18:51","modified_gmt":"2014-03-25T10:18:51","slug":"young-minds-full-of-mush","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=42648","title":{"rendered":"An Idea Whose Time Has Come"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m given some hope by the story that a group of U of\u00a0M students are <a href=\"http:\/\/kstp.com\/news\/stories\/s3373568.shtml\">actively working to get the U of M to lift its ban on students exercising their civil liberty and\u00a0right to defend themselves<\/a>\u00a0from the crime that&#8217;s endemic in the U of M area:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A string of robberies on the U of M campus late last year escalated on Nov. 11, when the campus went into lockdown because of an attempted robbery at gunpoint, and the suspect got away. A month later, in December 2013 there was another armed robbery on campus.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Predictably, the pro-carry students are smart and well-informed:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>U of M freshman William Preachuk believes things could have ended differently if he&#8217;d been able to pack heat. &#8220;I would believe that I have the right to defend myself; I have the right to protect others as well as myself only if the situation allows it,&#8221; William Preachuk said.<\/p>\n<p>Preachuk signed a petition Monday that&#8217;ll be sent to the Board of Regents asking to be allowed conceal and carry on campus.<\/p>\n<p>Susan Eckstine with College Republicans is a permit holder and trained in using a gun. &#8220;If I was able to carry a firearm here on campus I&#8217;d feel a lot safer to protect myself from a life threatening situation,&#8221; Eckstine said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Other students, however, continue to make me worry about the next generation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;You&#8217;re only creating more potential violence by adding more weapons than the other way around,&#8221; sophomore Jennifer Lakritz said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to assume Ms. Lakritz has been taught that this is a fact, but not taught the almost supernatural research skills that&#8217;d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/Big-Government\/2013\/08\/24\/Concealed-Carry-Proves-Guns-Are-Part-Of-The-Solution-To-Gun-Violence\">show her that that&#8217;s a complete lie<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I feel if you really are afraid for your protection then you should have police officers around instead,&#8221; junior Kevin Jacob said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Huh.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Jacob:\u00a0 how do you arrange to have the police &#8220;around&#8221;, as your personal security detail, if you are genuinely afraid?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>How precisely <em>did <\/em>you manage to pull that off?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m given some hope by the story that a group of U of\u00a0M students are actively working to get the U of M to lift its ban on students exercising their civil liberty and\u00a0right to defend themselves\u00a0from the crime that&#8217;s endemic in the U of M area: A string of robberies on the U of [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[45],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-42648","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-gun-free-zones"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/42648","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=42648"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/42648\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":42651,"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/42648\/revisions\/42651"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=42648"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=42648"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=42648"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
