{"id":42115,"date":"2014-02-27T07:04:46","date_gmt":"2014-02-27T13:04:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=42115"},"modified":"2014-02-27T07:04:56","modified_gmt":"2014-02-27T13:04:56","slug":"the-ringer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=42115","title":{"rendered":"The Ringer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The relationship between the Democrats and the \u00a0media <del>occasionally<\/del> usually seems intimate to the point of unseemly.<\/p>\n<p>But it rarely seems like the media are\u00a0<em>directly employed\u00a0<\/em>by the Democrat party (Keri Miller and Lori Sturdevant notwithstanding).<\/p>\n<p>But that&#8217;s changed.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps you recall; a few years ago, I was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=17622\">part of a small group<\/a> &#8211; along with left-leaning reporter David Brauer and several Senate staffers &#8211; that rewrote the Senate&#8217;s media credentialing rules. \u00a0The changes opened up the Senate to all manner of alternative media, including bloggers.<\/p>\n<p>That was a good thing.<\/p>\n<p>But one of the rules read like this: &#8220;Organizations owned or controlled by registered lobbyists, political parties or other party organizations (defined as organizations registered with the Campaign Finance Board or\u00a0the Federal Election Commission) shall not be granted\u00a0credentials.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bill Glahn <a href=\"http:\/\/billglahn.blogspot.com\/2014\/02\/hired-guns.html\">noticed something<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It turns out that in 2012 and 2013, the senate Democrats paid a total of $30,250 for \u201cresearch\u201d to a company listed as \u201cEnlighten Enterprise\u201d of 254 Wheeler Street in St. Paul.<\/p>\n<p>Records on file at the Minnesota State Secretary of State\u2019s Office show that a company called \u201cEnlightened Enterprises\u201d was registered at that address on July 25, 2012 by a Shawn Towle. The first payment from senate Democrats to Enlighten Enterprise occurred on July 26, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>As pure coincidence would have it, a Shawn Towle is listed in both the 2012 and 2013 editions of Capitol News Coverage Directory as an accredited member of the senate press corps, representing Checks &amp; Balances. That Shawn Towle is also listed in the current 2014 edition.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sources in the Senate tell me Towle is at press conferences, pressing Republicans and back-slapping Democrats&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;which is fine, and not much different than the rest of the Capitol press corps.<\/p>\n<p>But none of them are<em> paid by the Senate DFL Caucus<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Is the Senate DFL paying for &#8220;media&#8221; presence, and violating its own rules in the process?<\/p>\n<p>Someone should ask Tom Bakk&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>More later.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The relationship between the Democrats and the \u00a0media occasionally usually seems intimate to the point of unseemly.
