{"id":41202,"date":"2014-01-23T12:15:55","date_gmt":"2014-01-23T18:15:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=41202"},"modified":"2014-07-15T09:38:50","modified_gmt":"2014-07-15T14:38:50","slug":"by-government-committee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=41202","title":{"rendered":"By Government Committee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It made the news\u00a0 last year &#8211; a number of ghastly gang rapes in India that outraged the parts of the nation that were capable of outrage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The BBC reports that some Indian women are taking the sensible approach &#8211; within the bounds of India&#8217;s patriarchical and confusing gun laws, anyway &#8211; and arming themselves.<\/p>\n<p>There are really two stories, here:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parallels<\/strong>:\u00a0 It&#8217;s interesting to see that India &#8211; which\u00a0is behind only the US in numbers of private guns in circulaation, mostly unregistered &#8211; \u00a0has some of the same battle lines as the US does.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On the one hand, the hysterical gun-grabbers, with their downright delusional views on what &#8220;security&#8221; means.\u00a0 Their anti-gunners are as big a pack of ninnies as ours are (with emphasis added by me):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I am horrified, shocked and angered,&#8221; says Binalakshmi Nepram, founder of the Women Gun Survivors Network in the north-eastern state of Manipur, who says <strong>it&#8217;s the government&#8217;s responsibility to ensure the security of its citizens.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s ridiculous that the state is talking about arming women&#8230; The authorities saying, &#8216;Hey woman, come there&#8217;s a new gun for you which will make you safer,&#8217; <strong>is an admission of failure on their part<\/strong>.&#8221;&#8230;Nepram, whose organisation has been studying gun violence in eight Indian states for a number of years, says having a gun doesn&#8217;t &#8220;make you safer, it actually enhances your risk&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our research shows that a person is 12 times more likely to be shot dead if they are carrying a gun when attacked,&#8221; she says.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And\u00a0on the other, smart people who know what&#8217;s really up &#8211; like this Indian top cop who echoes the opinion of Detroit&#8217;s chief of police:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ram Krishna Chaturvedi, the chief of police for Kanpur and several nearby districts, thinks it does.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is definitely a good idea. If you have a licensed weapon, it increases your self-confidence and creates fear in the minds of criminals,&#8221; she says<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now, we live in the US.\u00a0 As the media reminds us, there are a lot of guns out there &#8211; almost all of them in the hands of law-abiding citizens.\u00a0 And there are private firearms companies that are more than happy to fill the demand, which has been unprecedented for the past five years (even as crime rates plummet).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Design By Government Committee<\/strong>:\u00a0 The BBC piece leads with the introduction of a &#8220;pistol for women&#8221;, by the Indian Ordnance Factory (a state-run gun works in the city of Kanpur).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 634px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/72266000\/png\/_72266859_gun1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The &#8220;Nirbheek&#8221;. 1.1 pounds, .32 caliber.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The plant&#8217;s spokesman says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s small, it&#8217;s lightweight, it weighs only 500g [1.1lb], and it can easily fit into a lady&#8217;s purse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>[Plant manager Abdul] Hameed speaks enthusiastically about the .32-calibre revolver, praising the &#8220;special titanium alloy body, the pleasing-to-the-eye wooden handle&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The six-shot gun is easy to handle and it can hit its target accurately up to 15m [50ft],&#8221; he explains, pointing out the word &#8220;Nirbheek&#8221; engraved on the barrel.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you&#8217;re a gun geek, the profile looks familiar.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/p2.la-img.com\/368\/37062\/15564904_1_l.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"351\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Webley .455 revolver &#8211; a veteran of the Boer War and World War 1, designed in 1887.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In other words, the Indian government has scaled down a 125-year-old design, replacing the docile but effective .455 cartidge with the .32 popgun round &#8211; itself barely more powerful than a .22 caliber plinking gun. And it scaled &#8220;down&#8221; to a little over a pound.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, yeah &#8211; and it costs $1,900, brand new.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In comparison, a typical little .380 caliber pocket pistol weights in around 10 ounces unloaded, and fires a round with almost double the hitting power of the puny .32.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 854px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn2.bigcommerce.com\/server5100\/7g4m0\/products\/24466\/images\/112308\/16959451134f7182a404d78024bde610__63654.1349194962.1280.1280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"844\" height=\"655\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Kahr .380 pocket pistol; 2\/3 the weight of the Indian gun, double the hitting power, and holds an extra round in the bargain.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And you can buy almost five of the Kahrs for the price of one of the Indian pieces.<\/p>\n<p>Just saying &#8211; yay, free enterprise.<\/p>\n<p>And I want to set up a SIG sales territory in Mumbai.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It made the news\u00a0 last year &#8211; a number of ghastly gang rapes in India that outraged the parts of the nation that were capable of outrage.\u00a0 The BBC reports that some Indian women are taking the sensible approach &#8211; within the bounds of India&#8217;s patriarchical and confusing gun laws, anyway &#8211; and arming themselves.
