{"id":41,"date":"2006-08-07T15:53:37","date_gmt":"2006-08-07T21:53:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php\/2006\/08\/07\/it-was-twenty-years-ago-today-part-xxxiv\/"},"modified":"2006-08-07T15:53:37","modified_gmt":"2006-08-07T21:53:37","slug":"it-was-twenty-years-ago-today-part-xxxiv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=41","title":{"rendered":"It Was Twenty Years Ago Today, Part XXXIV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was Thursday, August 7, 1986.\u00a0 The latest battle in the culture war had just been joined.<\/p>\n<p>Some disk jockey somewhere had &#8220;back-masked&#8221; the theme for the &#8220;Mister Ed&#8221; show &#8211; played it backwards on a turntable or reel-to-reel tape deck.\u00a0 Somehow, &#8220;A horse is a horse is a horse of course, unless of course it is the hourse is the famous Mister Ed&#8221; turned into &#8220;Song to Satan&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Supposedly.<\/p>\n<p>We were on the air that Thursday afternoon, taking calls on the topic. I was screening, Dave Elvin was on the board.<\/p>\n<p>I listened to the purportedly-offending tape.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Mra mra mra mra sheeee ashoooaaaah uh shaaaaaaayn mooooaaaah mra mra mmmmmmmuaaaaa&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I just wasn&#8217;t hearing it.<\/p>\n<p>This was, of course, during they heyday of the Peters Brothers, Twin Cities-area evangelists whose assaults on satanic influences in rock and roll, movies and other pop culture made them national celebrities.\u00a0 Someone, somewhere in their church, had thought to play the &#8220;Mister Ed&#8221; theme backwards, found that little snippet of pseudo-scary sound, and made a big stink about it in the media.\u00a0 In a few weeks there&#8217;d another controversy, another book, another rumor&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>We took a caller.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hey, Don &#8211; why don&#8217;t you see if your new theme song has any satanic messages in it?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Don chuckled.\u00a0 &#8220;Yeaaaaah.\u00a0 Good question&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dave Elvin didn&#8217;t need to be told twice.\u00a0 He played the theme song onto a reel to reel tape on an off-air &#8220;audition&#8221; circuit (a feature on control boards that allows a moderately-talented operator to do two things at the same time).\u00a0 He recorded the song, then stopped the reel recorder, and swapped the reels.\u00a0 The tape was ready to play backwards.\u00a0 I passed the word to Don.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ladies and Gentlemen&#8221;, Don started, &#8220;we&#8217;re now going to investigate our new theme song for satanic messages&#8221;.\u00a0 Dave rolled the tape.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Nud nud nud ah ma nud nod aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah ma&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Nothing remarkable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oh, yeah&#8221;, Don chuckled, &#8220;I hear something&#8230;satanic&#8230;&#8221; he vamped as the tape played, in the chuckle-y voice he had when something was on the verge of amusing him.<\/p>\n<p>I listened carefully to the tape as Don talked.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Nud nud nud awwwwwwwwwwww, sit on my rod<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Dave!&#8221;, I yelled.\u00a0 &#8220;It said &#8216;sit on my rod&#8217;&#8230;&#8221;.\u00a0 I punched the talkback button, into Don&#8217;s headphones on the air.\u00a0 &#8220;Don!\u00a0 It said &#8216;sit on my rod!&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Don chuckled.\u00a0 &#8220;We have word that there&#8217;s a&#8230;message&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Nud nud nud awwwwwwwwwwww, sit on my rod<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Don caught it this time.<\/p>\n<p>Don had several levels of laughter.\u00a0 There was his mild chuckle, when someting amused him.\u00a0 There was his explosive chucke &#8211; &#8220;g-HAAAAAAAAA&#8221; &#8211; when something caught him by surprise.\u00a0 And then there was the final, highest level; you&#8217;d hear a high-pitched wheeze, and then silence punctuated by a high-toned groan as Don struggled to regain control of his rampant funny bone.<\/p>\n<p>We weren&#8217;t doing much better in the control room.\u00a0 We had a few seconds of dead air, punctuated by Don&#8217;s wheeze.\u00a0 Then Dave replayed the song again.\u00a0 And we heard it again:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Nud nud nud awwwwwwwwwwww, sit on my rod<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And Don broke up again.<\/p>\n<p>It took a few minutes, but Don finally got back on the mike. &#8220;Well, there you have it.\u00a0 Bill Kremlinger&#8217;s Don Vogel theme has a backmasked message!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kremlinger called a few minutes later.\u00a0 &#8220;You&#8217;re on to me&#8221;, he chuckled.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it was random &#8211; Kremlinger&#8217;s Vogel theme was the lowest-tech piece of &#8220;music&#8221; ever recorded.<\/p>\n<p>I think of that every time someone <i>swears<\/i> they found some evil intent in something that someone else says&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was Thursday, August 7, 1986.\u00a0 The latest battle in the culture war had just been joined.
