{"id":40568,"date":"2013-12-23T12:00:48","date_gmt":"2013-12-23T18:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=40568"},"modified":"2013-12-20T10:21:46","modified_gmt":"2013-12-20T16:21:46","slug":"things-im-supposed-to-love-but-usually-cant-stand-crosby-stills-nash-and-occasionally-young","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=40568","title":{"rendered":"Things I&#8217;m Supposed To Love But Usually Can&#8217;t Stand: Crosby, Stills, Nash, And Occasionally Young"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ever since I&#8217;ve been involved in music, it&#8217;s seemed there&#8217;s been one crowd or another telling me who I&#8217;m supposed to like.<\/p>\n<p>In college, the music majors all dug the Alan Parsons Project. \u00a0&#8220;It&#8217;s like&#8230;above rock&#8221;, they mewled. \u00a0Perhaps it was; it was also beneath interesting.<\/p>\n<p>There were others.<\/p>\n<p>(Below the jump, because of all the videos)<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Back in high school, and running at least part way through college, one of the &#8220;Yougottas&#8221; was the various incarnations of Crosby, Stills and Nash (sometimes with, sometimes without Young).<\/p>\n<p>And in the days before music videos and ubiquitous internet reporting about all things celebrity, all I had to go by was the tale of the vinyl or the tape; I didn&#8217;t know so much what an insufferable bunch of flower children they were; I didn&#8217;t see Graham Nash&#8217;s constant mugging, David Crosby&#8217;s smug Malibu politics and eternal hippie-dippiness, Steven Stills&#8217; pointless prickliness.<\/p>\n<p>But I did hear Stills&#8217; interchangeable, meandering guitar style (on the electric, anyway &#8211; he&#8217;s always been a very capable acoustic guitar stylist). \u00a0The endless procession of minor-to-augmented-seventh chord progressions. \u00a0And always, always the music &#8211; as over-ornamented in its 3-4 part augmented-key harmonies as any Mariah Carey obligato-ing, and\u00a0Crosby&#8217;s ninthing and Nash&#8217;s way-too-high, way-too-nasal, annoyingly-perfect harmony:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WGtFRsCXRcc\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Yeah, yeah, I know &#8211; it was the prototype of a whole decade&#8217;s worth of &#8220;California&#8221; pop; the Eagles&#8217; roadhouse-ier take, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, America, JD Souther, both of the most successful incarnations of Fleetwood Mac, yadda yadda.\u00a0\u00a0It&#8217;s all duly noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Problem is, most of that genre always bored me stiff, too.\u00a0 More on that later.<\/p>\n<p>Except occasionally when it didn&#8217;t &#8211; as when Stills would cut back on the &#8220;oblique&#8221; and write in the indicative, and the harmonies would turn from fussy, augmented\/minor noodling to glorious, wide-open,\u00a0almost choral\u00a0majors:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iuLBhxZUkmU\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Or when Neil Young would join the band and stir up CSN&#8217;s complacent pot with a dollop of frantic, biplolar, inspired chaos:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/frJP0J7SKi4\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>So it&#8217;s not like I don&#8217;t like CSN (and occasionally Y); it&#8217;s just that the stuff I like comes so few and far between.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As with everything in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?tag=love-and-hate\">this series<\/a>, it&#8217;s never simple&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ever since I&#8217;ve been involved in music, it&#8217;s seemed there&#8217;s been one crowd or another telling me who I&#8217;m supposed to like.
