Heather Martens. \u00a0I speculated that it might be the reason that MPR has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=19611\">so incurious about Martens&#8217; astroturf group<\/a>, and why the\u00a0<em>MinnPost\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; with all its pretenses to legitimate journalism &#8211; spent the past year <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=34853\">giving Martens a public tongue bath<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?attachment_id=25707\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-25707\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-25707\" title=\"DFLMinistryofTruthLARGE\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/DFLMinistryofTruthLARGE.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/DFLMinistryofTruthLARGE.png 320w, http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/DFLMinistryofTruthLARGE-300x227.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I asked &#8211; does this involvement go any higher in the Twin Cities&#8217; &#8220;progressive&#8221; political world?<\/p>\n<p>I asked, and <a href=\"http:\/\/billglahn.blogspot.com\/2013\/01\/follow-money-takeaction-part-5.html\">Bill Glahn answered &#8211; ten months ago<\/a>. \u00a0Joyce is a\u00a0<em>huge\u00a0<\/em>financial backer of &#8220;Take Action MN&#8221;, a non-profit that verges on being a political party in its own right, a descendent of &#8220;Progressive Minnesota&#8221;, which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/archives\/002125.html\">had its own unseemly connections with &#8220;non-partisan&#8221; institutions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Glahn:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.joycefdn.org\/about\/our-history\">The Joyce Foundation<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0Chicago,\u00a0Illinois, was founded by\u00a0Iowa\u00a0lumber heiress Beatrice Joyce Kean.\u00a0\u00a0This $760 million foundation has been involved with TakeAction since near the beginning of the\u00a0Minnesota\u00a0non-profit\u2019s existence.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.joycefdn.org\/assets\/1\/7\/06_AnnualReport.pdf\">Joyce&#8217;s 2006 Annual Report<\/a>\u00a0(p. 25) shows a grant of $350,000 to be paid out to TakeAction over two years, \u201cTo develop and promote a political reform agenda focused on campaign finance, judicial, and voting rights reforms.\u201d<br \/>\nJoyce\u2019s 2009 IRS Form 990 reveals that the $350,000 grant to the 501(c)(3) TakeAction Minnesota Education Fund was renewed in 2008 for two additional years, \u201cfor ongoing efforts to reform and strengthen democracy in Minnesota.\u201d<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blogger.com\/blogger.g?blogID=3509166339275758863#_ftn12\">[12]<\/a><br \/>\nJoyce\u2019s 2011 IRS Form 990 reveals that, yet again, the $350,000 grant to the TakeAction Education Fund was renewed in 2010 for two additional years, \u201cFor advancing a political reform agenda that encompasses election administration, voting rights, campaign finance, redistricting, and judicial independence.\u201d<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blogger.com\/blogger.g?blogID=3509166339275758863#_ftn13\">[13]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Joyce Foundation\u2019s website indicates that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.joycefdn.org\/programs\/money-and-politics\/money-and-politics-grantees\">the TakeAction Education Fund<\/a>\u00a0received an additional $150,000 in 2012 for one year, \u201cFor advancing a democracy reform agenda using legislation, community organizing, movement building, coalition work, and unexpected alliances.\u201d<br \/>\nUnexpected alliances?\u00a0\u00a0In any event, <strong>the seven-year total of grants from the Joyce Foundation to TakeAction equals $1,200,000<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So let&#8217;s break this down: \u00a0The Joyce Foundation heavily sponsors &#8220;Progressive&#8221; non-profits, including &#8220;Take Action MN&#8221;, &#8220;Protect MN&#8221;, and (I strongly suspect) &#8220;Common Cause MN&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>And they pour money into at least two &#8220;non-profit&#8221; Minnesota media outlets that have pretensions to respectability; Minnesota Public Radio and the\u00a0<em>MinnPost<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve sought comment from both organizations in the past, without success. \u00a0I&#8217;ll try again.<\/p>\n<p>All of this carefully obfuscated money going to support &#8220;campaign finance&#8230;reforms&#8221; is one thing.<\/p>\n<p>Going to buy friendly media coverage?<\/p>\n<p>And finding willing takers, in an industry whose &#8220;code of ethics&#8221; tells journalists who avoid financial entanglements in their &#8220;journalism?&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In past months, I&#8217;ve showed you how not only big-media-alum group-blog MinnPost, but &#8220;No Rant, No Slant&#8221;
