{"id":39272,"date":"2013-10-28T08:00:38","date_gmt":"2013-10-28T13:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=39272"},"modified":"2014-12-12T14:38:34","modified_gmt":"2014-12-12T20:38:34","slug":"watching-the-astroturf-grow-alinski-walks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=39272","title":{"rendered":"Watching The AstroTurf Grow: &#8220;The New Dialog &#8211; We Talk, You Shut Up&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This past Friday, I talked with Susie Jones, a reporter from WCCO Radio, about the Gun Grab Summit in North Minneapolis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, I&#8217;m stuck in a bit of a conundrum, myself.\u00a0 On the one hand, I <em>do <\/em>seek a civil, grown-up dialog.\u00a0 As a gun owner, I have a vested interest in making sure my &#8220;tribe&#8221; &#8211; the law-abiding gun owner &#8211; acts in a way that credits the responsibility that God gave us and that our Founding Fathers recognized in the Constitution (a responsibility that the record shows we&#8217;re really, really good at meeting).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I also have kids.\u00a0 And a granddaughter.\u00a0 Violence is an awful thing.\u00a0 Protecting against violence is one of the reasons I <em>would <\/em>be a gun owner, hypothetically.<\/p>\n<p>So curbing violence &#8211; with guns, knives, axes, fists, cars, sex organs and every other kind &#8211; is Job 1 for me, and for every law-abding gun owner I know.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand?\u00a0 It&#8217;s hard to stay adult and civil when dealing with &#8220;ProtectMN&#8221;, the Joyce-Foundation supported astroturf group that has been campaigning against guns &#8211; as opposed to violence &#8211; under several names for a couple decades now.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Part of it is that the group &#8211; its&#8217; leader, Representative Heather Martens (DFL HD 67A), speaking as a leader and as an individual &#8211; has never, ever uttered a solitary substantive word of truth on the gun issue.\u00a0 Ever.\u00a0 Seriously &#8211; you can tell Ms. Martens is lying when you see her lips move.\u00a0 She is the most disingenuous person anywhere in Minnesota public life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yes, worse than Carrie Lucking.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We are constantly reminded that we need to have a &#8220;Dialog&#8221; about gun violence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And &#8220;Dialog&#8221; requires honesty.\u00a0 So I&#8217;m going to be honest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Monologue And Backstory<\/strong>:\u00a0 The key to &#8220;Dialog&#8221; is, of course, discussion between two divergent-to-dissenting points of view.\u00a0 Otherwise, all you have is a monologue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, in his <a href=\"http:\/\/minnesota.cbslocal.com\/2013\/10\/25\/150-gather-in-n-mpls-for-gun-violence-prevention-summit\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">conversation with WCCO&#8217;s Jones on Friday, <\/span><\/span><\/a>&#8220;ProtectMN&#8221;s Leroy Duncan flatly denied that anyone was told not to show up at the event.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But at least one executive from the Gun Owners Civil Rights Alliance responded to ProtectMN&#8217;s invitation to Friday&#8217;s event<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=39245\">; I reprinted Heather Martens&#8217; response to that GOCRA offical here the other day<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, this is what ProtectMN put up on their Facebook page the other day.\u00a0 Read it and tell me&#8230;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s time to stop letting our critical national debates be handled by lunatics, and by corporate lobbyists. It\u2019s time for us to take up the mantle of civics and citizenship again, beyond our narrow self-interest.<\/p>\n<p>We need to have a real discussion about the civic duty of gun ownership sooner, rather than later. It\u2019s time for the grownups to start talking, and more importantly, to take action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The MN Gun Violence Summit will consist of \u201cgrown-ups\u201d talking about how to make our communities safer and reframe the debate about gun policy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;if all of that Alinskyite framing (&#8220;lunatics&#8221;, &#8220;grown-ups&#8221;) sounds like someone looking for a dialog?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Class Warfare<\/strong>:\u00a0 Jones noted in her conversation with me that some of the people at the &#8220;summit&#8221; had complained that the issue was a matter of the plucky, put-upon inner city versus the smug, complacent suburbs &#8211; and that shooters just don&#8217;t understand life in the inner city.<\/p>\n<p>I refuted them thusly; me.\u00a0 I live in the Midway.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve had a drive-by shooting in front of my house.\u00a0 I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=1922\">had a break-in when I was in my house<\/a>, once upon a time; the sound of my own firearm ended the incident.\u00a0 Senseless violence?\u00a0 A four-year-old girl was murdered half a mile from my house, right about the time I had two kids in her age bracket.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gun violence affects my city.\u00a0 My quality of life.\u00a0 My property value.\u00a0 Just as much as it does yours, and more than it does those of any of the leadership of &#8220;ProtectMN&#8221; and &#8220;Moms Want Action&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And &#8211; this is the important part -not a single proposal they&#8217;re making, or have ever made, would affect gun violence in the least.<\/p>\n<p>So, Mr. Duncan, please spare us the BS and never, ever play that crap with me.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And the fact is, many shooters live in the suburbs <em>because <\/em>decades of DFL mismanagement have left the cities much more dangerous than the subs, the exurbs or Greater Minnesota.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, given that Minneapolis and Saint Paul have the lowest incidence of civilian gun ownership in the State <em>and <\/em>the highest crime rates, perhaps it&#8217;s time we considered whether <em>owning <\/em>guns is a better deterrent to violence than banning them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Potemkin Mission<\/strong>:\u00a0 But &#8220;ProtectMN&#8221; isn&#8217;t about curbing violence.\u00a0 Not even a little bit.<\/p>\n<p>Proof:\u00a0 In the legislative session just passed, most of the Legislature got behind a bill, HF1325, sponsored by Rep. Hilstrom (DFL, some godforsaken Western suburb). The bill would have added mandatory penalties for using a gun to commit a crime, and improved the state&#8217;s reporting to the national background check database (a ball the DFL has been dropping for over a decade now)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;y&#8217;know &#8211; things that <strong>have a record in curbing violence<em>.\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the mission &#8211; right?<\/p>\n<p>Not for &#8220;ProtectMN&#8221;.\u00a0 They &#8211; Martens and the Metrocrat DFLers who controlled the Legislature &#8211; fought like hell <em>against the bill that would address violence <\/em>with measures that have actually worked around the country, claiming it was &#8220;The NRA&#8217;s Bill&#8221; (which was written by a rep with an &#8220;F&#8221; rating from the NRA, but whatever).\u00a0 Instead, they fought for useless fripperies like magazine size restrictions, and yapping about cosmetic features of different guns &#8211; things that don&#8217;t and have never had the faintest impact on violence <em>at the very most<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Zero.<\/p>\n<p>Nada.<\/p>\n<p>Zilch.<\/p>\n<p>So I ask you &#8211; who is actually &#8220;dealing with violence&#8221;?\u00a0 And who is acting out a fetish over metal objects?<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Takeaways From The &#8220;Summit&#8221;<\/strong>:\u00a0 I&#8217;d like to address this to my brothers and sisters, my fellow human beings in places like North Minneapolis and the lower East Side.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There is a &#8220;dialog&#8221; to be had about gun violence.\u00a0 And we, your fellow Americans and Minnesotans of the Second Amendment community, are more than ready to have exactly that.\u00a0 We, like you, want to make your streets, neighborhoods and homes safer &#8211; because they&#8217;re our streets, neighborhoods and homes, too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;ProtectMN&#8221; doesn&#8217;t care about &#8220;violence&#8221;.\u00a0 They froth and fume about guys in Lakeville with AR15s &#8211; and you know as well as I do (and Heather Martens does not) that they and their guns aren&#8217;t the problem.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the criminals.\u00a0 The people who couldn&#8217;t pass a background check when they were 18, and sure as hell can&#8217;t pass one now.<\/p>\n<p>And let the record show that Protect MN fought <em>against <\/em>the legislation that would attack them, in favor of attacking the law-abiding, in the past session.<\/p>\n<p>And starting in January, they&#8217;re going to ramp up that attack.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More later.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This past Friday, I talked with Susie Jones, a reporter from WCCO Radio, about the Gun Grab Summit in North Minneapolis.\u00a0 Now, I&#8217;m stuck in a bit of a conundrum, myself.\u00a0 On the one hand, I do seek a civil, grown-up dialog.\u00a0 As a gun owner, I have a vested interest in making sure my [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[325,22],"tags":[270,274],"class_list":["post-39272","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-big-gun-control","category-victim-disarmament","tag-2nd-amendment-grass-roots","tag-protectmn"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/39272","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=39272"}],"version-history":[{"count":21,"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/39272\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":49754,"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/39272\/revisions\/49754"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=39272"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=39272"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=39272"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
