{"id":39112,"date":"2013-10-20T09:00:34","date_gmt":"2013-10-20T14:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=39112"},"modified":"2013-10-19T09:52:16","modified_gmt":"2013-10-19T14:52:16","slug":"doakes-sunday-tell-them-no","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=39112","title":{"rendered":"Doakes Sunday: Tell Them No"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><\/strong>Joe Doakes from Como Park emails:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Remember Aesop\u2019s fable about the country mouse and the city mouse?\u00a0 I felt that way when I moved to Saint Paul.\u00a0 Not because the buildings were strangely tall but because the residents were strangely liberal.<\/p>\n<p>Years ago, I attended an out-state Republican Precinct Caucus in Senate District 16A represented by Republican Joe Niehaus, who came to the caucus and asked for our votes.\u00a0 He promised that if we re-elected him, he\u2019d go to St. Paul and vote NO.\u00a0 If they ask to raise taxes, he\u2019d vote NO.\u00a0 If they ask for unilateral disarmament, he\u2019d vote NO.\u00a0 If they . . . by the time he finished, the whole crowd was yelling NO at every punch line and they meant every word of it.\u00a0 Whatever it was, he was against it, and so were all of us. \u00a0Joe Niehaus was my kind of conservative because he understood that things which have stood the test of time should continue, government should do only what\u2019s absolutely necessary and then at the lowest organizational level, and when you maximize personal responsibility, you maximize personal freedom to boot.<\/p>\n<p>Years later, I attended a St. Paul Republican Precinct Caucus and sat between two people who would have been branded Commies had they been out-state.\u00a0 The resolutions passed up to the county level were just as leftist as anything the out-state Democrats would have wanted.\u00a0 I felt completely out of place at that meeting.\u00a0 I was the only Joe Niehaus conservative there.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m getting that feeling again, watching senior Republican members of Congress congratulate themselves for caving in to Democrats.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t have to cave in, they didn\u2019t have to do anything at all.\u00a0 Just sit quietly until the default date appeared, call the President\u2019s bluff, and wait for him to come to the bargaining table.
