{"id":38946,"date":"2013-10-09T12:51:42","date_gmt":"2013-10-09T17:51:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=38946"},"modified":"2013-10-09T12:51:42","modified_gmt":"2013-10-09T17:51:42","slug":"couldnt-see-this-coming-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=38946","title":{"rendered":"Couldn&#8217;t See This Coming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As &#8220;bullies&#8221; have become public enemy number one, a scourge being tackled by state legislatures, you might think that all of this frenzied activity would be affecting the incidence of bullying.<\/p>\n<p>And you&#8217;d be right &#8211; but <a href=\"http:\/\/dfw.cbslocal.com\/2013\/10\/08\/are-anti-bullying-programs-having-an-opposite-effect\/\">not in the way you&#8217;d suspect<\/a>.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll add some emphasis:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It started as a simple look at bullying. University of Texas at Arlington criminologist Seokjin Jeong analyzed data collected from 7,000 students from all 50 states.<\/p>\n<p>He thought the results would be predictable and would show that anti-bullying programs curb bullying. Instead \u2014 he found the opposite.<\/p>\n<p>Jeong said it was, \u201cA very disappointing and a very surprising thing. <strong>Our anti-bullying programs, either intervention or prevention does not work<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study concluded that <strong>students at schools with anti-bullying programs might actually be more likely to become a victim of bullying<\/strong>. It also found that students at schools with no bullying programs were less likely to become victims.<\/p>\n<p>The results were stunning for Jeong. \u201cUsually people expect an anti-bullying program to have some impact \u2014 some positive impact.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Politics is the worst possible way to allocate resources; it may be even worse for regulating behavior.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As &#8220;bullies&#8221; have become public enemy number one, a scourge being tackled by state legislatures, you might think that all of this frenzied activity would be affecting the incidence of bullying.
