{"id":37764,"date":"2013-08-09T12:00:06","date_gmt":"2013-08-09T17:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=37764"},"modified":"2013-08-08T17:20:00","modified_gmt":"2013-08-08T22:20:00","slug":"corollary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=37764","title":{"rendered":"Corollary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Level-setting:\u00a0 Berg&#8217;s Laws are pretty much inviolable rules of human (largely political) behavior based on years of observation.\u00a0 And while Berg&#8217;s Seventh Law gets most of the action these days, Berg&#8217;s Tenth is getting a workout, too.<\/p>\n<p>Berg&#8217;s Tenth Law reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Berg\u2019s Tenth Law of Quantum Context<\/strong>: When a liberal says a conservative is \u201clying\u201d, the odds of the \u201clie\u201d being merely an ambiguity triggering some form of cognitive dissonance increases in geometric proportion with the volume and stridency of the liberal\u2019s declaration. Here are the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?tag=bergs-10th-law\">references in this blog to Berg\u2019s 10th Law<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00a0It&#8217;s a nice broad (but iron-clad) law.\u00a0 But sometimes laws need corollaries.<\/p>\n<p>Which brings us to &#8220;The Santorum Corollary&#8221; to Berg&#8217;s Tenth:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>The Santorum Corollary to Berg\u2019s Tenth Law<\/strong>:\u00a0 If the news media reports something askance about a conservative\u2019s behavior, a full look into the facts will almost invariably show that it was reported with key context missing.\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That&#8217;s <em>almost <\/em>invariably.\u00a0 People misbehave; sometimes they&#8217;re conservatives, sometimes they&#8217;re apolitical, and sometimes they&#8217;re liberals; the media reminds us of the conservative ones, anyway (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=37529\">sometimes in an onanistic frenzy<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>But the Santorum Corollary is nearly airtight, as in this week&#8217;s episode; the lefty &#8220;alternative&#8221; media <a href=\"http:\/\/twitchy.com\/2013\/08\/08\/more-huffpo-malfeasance-byron-york-forces-update-on-santorum-gym-shower-comments\/\">thought they heard Rick Santorum saying something weird<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; or so they were told by the HuffPo, which is paid good money to do &#8220;progressives'&#8221; thinking for them:<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the &#8220;story&#8221;, as reported by the HuffPo:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Speaking to anti-abortion group Students for Life after receiving an award last month, Santorum attempted to explain what he saw as an enthusiasm gap between liberal and conservative activists. During his speech, a clip of which can be seen above, via Right Wing Watch, Santorum argued that the pro-choice movement infuses passion about abortion rights into \u201cevery aspect of their life.\u201d He said that because of this, showering at a gym had become an \u201cuncomfortable\u201d prospect for students.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(Switching into leftyblogger cant):\u00a0 Oh, noez!\u00a0\u00a0 Can I haz weird?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>(Back to English):\u00a0 Showering around pro-choicers is &#8220;uncomfortable?&#8221;\u00a0 That sure sounds&#8230;off, doesn&#8217;t it?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the HuffPo said it!\u00a0 And thus it must be The Revealed Truth!\u00a0 Every leftyblogger <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/eric_pusey\/status\/365216789233270786\">took the &#8220;story&#8221; as gospel<\/a>\u00a0in the tittering, Junior-high cadence that is the lingua francaof the &#8220;Reality Based&#8221; alt-media community.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But was it accurate?<\/p>\n<p>Have you <em>read <\/em>the Santorum Corollary yet?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Of course<\/em> not!<\/p>\n<p>From the Byron York piece that the HuffPo wrenched out of context&#8230;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In July, members of anti-abortion group Students For Life, the group Santorum was addressing, complained that they had been bullied by pro-choice activists after using facilities at an Austin Y.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The group had come to the area to show support for anti-abortion legislation then being debated at the state Capitol, and had made last-minute arrangements to use showers at the gym. They did so one night, with the students entering the building in shifts wearing blue shirts, indicating support for the bill. After the first night went without incident, the Y contacted a director at Students For Life and asked them not to return.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the director of the anti-abortion group, YMCA staffers stated that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kvue.com\/news\/Anti-Abortion-group-claims-Town-Lake-YMCA-discriminated-against-them-214988651.html\">abortion rights activists had intimidated them into making the decision<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaid, again, \u2018You guys [the pro-life students]\u00a0were respectful.
