{"id":37153,"date":"2013-07-08T12:00:15","date_gmt":"2013-07-08T17:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=37153"},"modified":"2013-09-06T15:25:17","modified_gmt":"2013-09-06T20:25:17","slug":"rebuiding-the-state-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=37153","title":{"rendered":"Rebuilding The State Economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I met my friend Avery LIBRELLE yesterday out on the bike trail.\u00a0 Avery, naturally, rides a recumbant bike.\u00a0 Go figure.<\/p>\n<p>LIBRELLE:\u00a0 Hah!\u00a0 Tom Stinson, the state economist, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/opinion\/commentaries\/213593351.html?page=all&amp;prepage=1&amp;c=y#continue\">says that Minnesota is doing pretty well<\/a>!\u00a0 And that our education system is one of the reasons!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>MITCH:\u00a0 Well, good!<\/p>\n<p>LIBRELLE:\u00a0Hah!\u00a0 Better than good!\u00a0 It means the DFL plan for leading the state is the right one!<\/p>\n<p>MITCH: What?\u00a0 Give &#8220;eduation&#8221; everything it wants?<\/p>\n<p>LIBRELLE:\u00a0Yes!\u00a0 Raise your hand for the children!<\/p>\n<p>MITCH:\u00a0 Oboy.\u00a0 OK.\u00a0 For starters, yes &#8211; a workforce that can do the job, whatever the job is, is a good thing.\u00a0\u00a0But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=36995\">as we saw last week<\/a>, to a great extent education &#8211; at least, big institutional education &#8211; follows prosperity.\u00a0 Not the other way around.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And Minnesota prospered, especially during the &#8220;Minnesota Miracle&#8221;, as much due to its human, social and economic geography as anything else.\u00a0 It was the economic, social, population and communications center of a large, productive region &#8211; especially at a time when the United States as a whole had no competition.\u00a0 So while it certainly helped that Minnesota had a strong education system, it helped even more that we were in the right place at the right time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>LIBRELLE:\u00a0All the more reason to spend more on education!<\/p>\n<p>MITCH: Is it?\u00a0 Is our education system in Minnesota worth what we spend on it now?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Especially given the number of black, Latino and Asian Minnesotans who are being served so very very badly by our current system?\u00a0 Pouring money into a status quo that is decaying fast and is doing little more than resting on the laurels of an earlier era &#8211; and let&#8217;s not even address whether those laurels were especially deserved &#8211; is a huge mistake.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>LIBRELLE:\u00a0You are clearly a racist.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>MITCH:\u00a0 For wanting to fix a system that discriminates against minority Minnesotans?<\/p>\n<p>LIBRELLE:\u00a0 Yep!\u00a0 Sometimes you have to show them what&#8217;s right!<\/p>\n<p>MITCH: Huh.<\/p>\n<p>(And SCENE)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I met my friend Avery LIBRELLE yesterday out on the bike trail.\u00a0 Avery, naturally, rides a recumbant bike.\u00a0 Go figure.
