{"id":36639,"date":"2013-06-07T12:00:05","date_gmt":"2013-06-07T17:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=36639"},"modified":"2020-09-20T21:37:51","modified_gmt":"2020-09-21T02:37:51","slug":"the-left-hand-doesnt-know-what-the-further-left-hand-is-doing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=36639","title":{"rendered":"The Left Hand Doesn&#8217;t Know What The Further-Left Hand Is Doing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Depending on who you believe, the DFL apparently traded away a minimum wage bill for money to restore <del>the building they see as their clubhouse<\/del> the State Capitol.<\/p>\n<p>I stress the &#8220;depending on who you believe&#8221; bit, since I&#8217;m not entirely sure they even know themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe it&#8217;s just me. \u00a0Anyway &#8211; I read the story in the Joyce-Foundation-supported \u00a9\u00a0<em>MinnPost,<\/em> and it seems a little confusing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.minnpost.com\/politics-policy\/2013\/06\/did-bakk-trade-away-minimum-wage-measure-capitol-repairs-bonding-bill\">The piece, by James Nord, starts out<\/a> by noting (I&#8217;ll add emphasis) that&#8230;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>DFL Rep. Ryan Winkler and two Republican legislators who declined to speak on the record <strong>say Senate leaders came to a deal<\/strong> that secured a bonding bill for Capitol repairs and ensured an orderly end to the session in exchange for no action on those two policy provisions.<\/p>\n<p>Winkler, the chief House sponsor of the minimum wage legislation, said <strong>Republican lawmakers told him of the deal<\/strong>. He <a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/politics\/blogs\/208261591.html\">described his understanding of it to the Star Tribune<\/a> just after the session ended May 20.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>No, you need not link to the\u00a0<em>Strib<\/em>; I&#8217;ve done it for you. Here&#8217;s Winkler&#8217;s quote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-style: italic;\">Rep. Ryan Winkler, DFL-Golden Valley said leaders in his own party ditched a proposed minimum wage increase to accomplish other priorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Senator Bakk agreed with the Senate Republicans not to pass a minimum wage bill and not to pass the bullying bill<\/strong>, in order for them to agree to support a bonding bill to restore the State Capitol building,\u201d <strong>said Winkler, who heard the same story of the deal from House Republicans<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But &#8211; back to the Joyce-Foundation-supported \u00a9\u00a0<em>MinnPost, <\/em>now &#8211; later in the Nord piece, Winkler says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Winkler told MinnPost that he was standing next to House Speaker Paul Thissen at the speaker\u2019s rostrum when Minority Leader Kurt Daudt told Winkler about the agreement&#8230;<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-style: italic;\">Thissen said in an interview that he had heard about a supposed deal but didn\u2019t have any specific knowledge of it. He hadn\u2019t discussed the issue with Bakk or Hann.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When asked about the diverging stories, Winkler responded, \u201cWell, that may not have been a deal, but all the Republicans believe it was a deal. One way or another, somebody\u2019s misinformed.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This past session was replete with stories of how the various factions in the DFL were disjointed, how the left hand didn&#8217;t know what the farther-left hand was doing. \u00a0 \u00a0Especially amusing were the stories about how very, very badly Paul Thissen and Tom Bakk hate each other, and what a hard time they had working together.<\/p>\n<p>But a legislator appearing to disagree with\u00a0<em>himself<\/em>? \u00a0That&#8217;s a new one even for me.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Depending on who you believe, the DFL apparently traded away a minimum wage bill for money to restore the building they see as their clubhouse the State Capitol.
