{"id":36224,"date":"2013-05-08T12:15:22","date_gmt":"2013-05-08T17:15:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=36224"},"modified":"2013-05-08T12:24:52","modified_gmt":"2013-05-08T17:24:52","slug":"the-triumph-of-the-narrative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=36224","title":{"rendered":"The Triumph Of The Narrative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Crime in general &#8211; especially crimes committed with guns &#8211; is down over the past 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>Not just down. \u00a0Down\u00a0<em>drastically<\/em>. \u00a0As in &#8220;the kind of thing that should be provoking celebrations in the streets&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>And yet <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nation\/nationnow\/la-na-nn-gun-crimes-pew-report-20130507,0,3022693.story\">Americans think crime is rising<\/a>\u00a0(emphasis added):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-style: italic;\">The number of gun killings <strong>dropped 39% between 1993 and 2011<\/strong>, the Bureau of Justice Statistics reported in a separate report released Tuesday. <strong>Gun crimes that weren\u2019t fatal fell by 69%<\/strong>. However, guns still remain the most common murder weapon in the United States, the report noted. Between 1993 and 2011, more than two out of three murders in the U.S. were carried out with guns, the Bureau of Justice Statistics found.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif;\">But is the word getting out?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Despite the remarkable drop in gun crime, only <strong>12% of Americans surveyed said gun crime had declined<\/strong> compared with two decades ago, according to Pew, which surveyed more than 900 adults this spring. Twenty-six percent said it had stayed the same, and <strong>56% thought it had increased<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And how does that happen?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>It\u2019s unclear whether media coverage is driving the misconception<\/strong> that such violence is up. The mass shootings in Newtown, Conn., and Aurora, Colo., were among the news stories most closely watched by Americans last year, Pew found. Crime has also been a growing focus for national newscasts and morning network shows in the past five years but has become less common on local television news.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There&#8217;s nothing &#8220;unclear&#8221; about it.<\/p>\n<p>On a non-partisan level of cynicism &#8211; crime makes for ratings. \u00a0If it bleeds, it not only leads &#8211; it sells papers and gets people to tune in.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that the &#8220;guns are out of control&#8221; narrative supports the Administration for which the mainstream media serve as a Praetorian Guard? \u00a0Two hits for the price of one.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Crime in general &#8211; especially crimes committed with guns &#8211; is down over the past 20 years.
