{"id":34201,"date":"2013-02-11T08:06:21","date_gmt":"2013-02-11T14:06:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=34201"},"modified":"2013-02-11T08:06:21","modified_gmt":"2013-02-11T14:06:21","slug":"just-as-every-cop-is-a-criminal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=34201","title":{"rendered":"Just as Every Cop is a Criminal&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 379px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"   \" title=\"dorner\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.abclocal.go.com\/images\/kabc\/cms_exf_2007\/news\/dornergun.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"369\" height=\"207\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pleased to meet you, can you guess my name?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Plenty of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lyricsfreak.com\/r\/rolling+stones\/sympathy+for+the+devil_20117881.html\">sympathy<\/a> (and a <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/1m-reward-capture-fugitive-ex-cop-203538475--abc-news-topstories.html\">$1 million reward<\/a>) for the devil in Southern California.<\/p>\n<p>Former Marine and LAPD officer Chris Dorner promised to wage &#8220;unconventional and asymmetrical warfare&#8221; against his former employer in his <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/los-angeles-cops-chris-dorners-manifesto-speaks\/story?id=18434105\">bizarre manifesto<\/a>. \u00a0Five days into Dorner&#8217;s declaration of war against the LAPD, starting with murdering the 28 year-old daughter of a police officer and her\u00a0fianc\u00e9, it appears Dorner has made good on that threat as there has been little &#8220;conventional&#8221; in the reaction to his crimes.<\/p>\n<p>If Dorner believed that gunning down two innocent people, and two other police officers, would result in greater scrutiny of the LAPD, it was a bloody gamble that&#8217;s paid off. \u00a0In a matter of days, the LAPD has gone from <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/los-angeles-cops-chris-dorners-manifesto-speaks\/story?id=18434105\">dismissing Dorner&#8217;s account<\/a> of the reasons behind his firing to <a href=\"news.yahoo.com\/1m-reward-capture-fugitive-ex-cop-203538475--abc-news-topstories.html\">re-opening the investigation<\/a>. \u00a0LA Police Chief Charlie Beck denied the move was an attempt to &#8220;appease&#8221; Dorner. \u00a0It&#8217;s more likely an attempt to appease the public amid an ever-growing series of errors in the Dorner manhunt.<\/p>\n<p>Who might have guessed that the LAPD would be Dorner&#8217;s biggest ally in his murderous attempt to move public opinion? \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/local\/la-me-torrance-shooting-20130210,0,3955268.story\">Thus far<\/a>, the LAPD has managed to shoot one older woman in the back, terrify her daughter, and shoot at a thin white man in a supposed case of mistaken identity with a large black man. \u00a0Much was made in the media of Dorner&#8217;s military experience as a rationale for why authorities have been unable to find him in the resort community of Big Bear, where Dorner is said to be hiding. \u00a0But there&#8217;s little rationale for a trigger-happy police force that seems to be playing right into Dorner&#8217;s hands.<\/p>\n<p>And Dorner most certainly seems to have some sense of the media impact of his actions. \u00a0Writing in his <del>manifesto<\/del> screed, Dorner claimed:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The department has not changed since the Rampart and Rodney King days. It has gotten worse,&#8221; Dorner wrote. &#8220;I know I will be vilified by the LAPD and the media. Unfortunately, this is a necessary evil that I do not enjoy but must partake and complete for substantial change to occur within the LAPD and reclaim my name.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Apparently part of the &#8220;necessary evil&#8221; was taunting Monica Quan&#8217;s father Randall with a <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/1m-reward-capture-fugitive-ex-cop-203538475--abc-news-topstories.html\">phone call<\/a> in which he said Quan\u00a0&#8220;should have done a better job of protecting his daughter.&#8221; \u00a0Don&#8217;t worry, Dorner didn&#8217;t &#8220;enjoy&#8221; that.<\/p>\n<p>What Dorner might have had a harder time anticipating was a vocal minority insistent on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/02\/08\/christopher-dorner-fans-facebook-twitter_n_2647754.html\">turning him into a folk hero<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Supporters of Christopher Dorner, the former LA policeman turned &#8220;cop killer,&#8221; have shown up online, with tweets and fan pages on Facebook. Some call Dorner a &#8220;hero&#8221; for writing a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/02\/07\/christopher-dorner-writings-scariest-parts_n_2640034.html?1360353552\" target=\"_hplink\">nine-page manifesto<\/a>\u00a0alleged on racism and corruption within the LAPD.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous supporters on Twitter are calling the alleged murderer a &#8220;Dark Knight.&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Chris-Dorner\/122595954585025?sk=info\" target=\"_hplink\">One Facebook page calls him<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;the hero LA deserves, but not the one it needs right now &#8230; He&#8217;s a silent guardian, watchful protector against corruption, he&#8217;s our Dark Knight.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There&#8217;s even a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/IsupportCJD?group_id=0\">&#8220;I support Christopher Jordan Dorner&#8221;<\/a> Facebook page with over 7,000 &#8220;likes.&#8221; \u00a0The page&#8217;s creator is already promising &#8220;t-shirts, buttons, stickers + bumper stickers&#8221; because nothing says respectful, intellectual debate like mass marketing a psychopath. \u00a0Hey, it worked for Che Guevara.<\/p>\n<p>If Dorner really was the &#8220;whistleblower&#8221; he wants to define himself as, there were a myriad of ways for him to get his message out other than with a gun. \u00a0But his entire narrative of the LAPD is at odds with perception of the department. \u00a0After the disgrace of the<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rampart_scandal\"> Rampart scandal<\/a> in the late 90s, where 70 officers were implicated in misconduct with a gang strike force, the LAPD has seen a surge in popularity. \u00a0A 2009 poll put the LAPD at a nearly <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2009\/jun\/22\/local\/me-poll22\">80% approval rating<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Most of Dorner&#8217;s criticisms of the department aren&#8217;t exactly Serpico-level indictments, but rather tales of harassment and bureaucratic lethargy. \u00a0Hardly grounds for a killing spree. \u00a0Unless, of course, Dorner isn&#8217;t the &#8220;Dark Knight&#8221; wish fulfillment figure for some in Southern California but at heart just a deranged, vengeful man.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Plenty of sympathy (and a $1 million reward) for the devil in Southern California.
