{"id":3325,"date":"2008-09-18T07:20:48","date_gmt":"2008-09-18T12:20:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=3325"},"modified":"2008-09-18T07:20:48","modified_gmt":"2008-09-18T12:20:48","slug":"lying-by-omission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=3325","title":{"rendered":"Lying By Omission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As you read the lefty media &#8211; everything from the <em>NYTimes <\/em>to the <em>Strib<\/em> to the <em>Minnesoros &#8220;Independent<\/em>&#8221; &#8211; make a point of looking for the subtle bits of &#8220;dishonesty by omission&#8221; in the language.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve noticed for a while now that, try as you may, when the leftymedia writes about &#8220;Immigration&#8221;, they <em>never <\/em>distinguish between <em>legal <\/em>immigration and <em>illegal<\/em> immigration &#8211; as if there&#8217;s no difference between a legally-naturalized citizen who&#8217;s followed the rules, and someone who snuck across the border.<\/p>\n<p>Case in point &#8211; this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.minnesotaindependent.com\/9096\/report-the-anti-immigration-movement-that-failed\">deeply-misleading\u00a0 piece<\/a> by the <em>Minnesoros &#8220;Independent&#8221;<\/em>&#8216;s Anna Pratt:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The New York-based political group <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.progressivestates.org\/\">Progressive States Network (PSN)<\/a> has just released a report entitled, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.progressivestates.org\/content\/902\">\u201cThe Anti-Immigration Movement That Failed,\u201d<\/a> which counters media hype around anti-immigration legislation, revealing that over the past few years, states have largely enacted various policies that embrace new immigrants.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Pratt gives a <em>short <\/em>laundry list of &#8220;progressive&#8221; pro-immigrant laws &#8211; without making the distinction between laws meant to help and work with <em>legal <\/em>immigrants versus <em>illegal ones.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is important, since later on she snarks:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Only in a handful of states that were already conservative-leaning were \u201csignificant anti-immigrant policies able to make headway in 2008\u2026 Everywhere else, states either stalled anti-immigrant bills or enacted positive policies to better integrate new immigrants,\u201d the report reads.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The words &#8220;illegal&#8221; and &#8220;undocumented&#8221; don&#8217;t really pop up in the story.<\/p>\n<p>Now, in the article she links, they do.\u00a0 And what do they say?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.progressivestates.org\/content\/902\">Surprise<\/a>!<\/p>\n<blockquote \/>\n<blockquote><p>Only 11% of undocumented immigrants live in states that have enacted comprehensive punitive policies, while a significant majority of undocumented immigrants live in states with positive integrative or somewhat integrative policies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, &#8220;<strike>undocumented <\/strike>illegal immigrants go where the &#8220;progressives&#8221; make them welcome&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Hm.\u00a0 So conservatives are&#8230;correct?<\/p>\n<p>Look for the leftymedia to try to spread more obfuscation on this issue as we get closer to the election and beyond.<\/p>\n<blockquote \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As you read the lefty media &#8211; everything from the NYTimes to the Strib to the Minnesoros &#8220;Independent&#8221; &#8211; make a point of looking for the subtle bits of &#8220;dishonesty by omission&#8221; in the language.
