{"id":33135,"date":"2013-01-03T12:10:14","date_gmt":"2013-01-03T18:10:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=33135"},"modified":"2013-01-03T13:16:33","modified_gmt":"2013-01-03T19:16:33","slug":"stuck-on-stupid-ineffective-trivial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=33135","title":{"rendered":"Stuck On Stupid, Ineffective, Trivial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To: \u00a0The Saint Paul City Council<br \/>\nFrom: Mitch Berg, one of your few remaining ATMs<br \/>\nRe: \u00a0Your work ethic<\/p>\n<p>The Saint Paul City Council, having saved the downtown economic scene, balanced the city&#8217;s budget without gang-raping the city&#8217;s few remaining productive taxpayers, preventing a free-fall in property values&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;sheesh, I&#8217;m sorry. \u00a0I was laughing. \u00a0But it wasn&#8217;t the mirthful laugh of the happy and carefree. \u00a0It was more the resigned hacking cough of the guy in the engine room of a ship whose captain just keeps on ramming icebergs, since he&#8217;s still technically &#8220;afloat&#8221;, just to see what&#8217;ll happen.<\/p>\n<p>Where was I?<\/p>\n<p>Oh, yeah. \u00a0The City Council <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.twincities.com\/cityhallscoop\/2013\/01\/02\/st-paul-city-council-calls-for-statewide-ban-on-semi-automatics\/\">wants to ban scary guns<\/a>, provided that they&#8217;re just the ones in the hands of the law-abiding Minnesotan:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At the Wednesday, Jan. 2 council meeting, they amended their annual request to lawmakers to include a crackdown on semi-automatic weapons and high capacity magazines.<\/p>\n<p>They join a chorus of municipal bodies, politicians and Hollywood celebrities clamoring for tighter gun laws in the wake of the horrific school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Let&#8217;s summarize here:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The council of a stagnant city with a shriveling business base and whose only real resource anymore is &#8220;cheap-ish housing in a crap market&#8221; has&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;wasted city time to pass a meaningless resolution to&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;punish the vast majority of gun owners, the scrupulously law-abiding ones, because of&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;something they didn&#8217;t do, urging an action that&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;has never, ever, not even once, had a positive effect on violent crime, but indeed is positively linked to\u00a0<em>higher\u00a0<\/em>violent crime rates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<p>By the way, I&#8217;d like a word with the authors of the City Hall Scoop blog post:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Some gun enthusiasts are dubious that a ban on semi-automatics would have prevented the Newtown tragedy and other tragic gun deaths.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Well, no &#8211; not just &#8220;gun enthusiasts&#8221;, but &#8220;people who actually study the issue empirically, rather than filtering it through partisan politics&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s try to get that straight.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Here\u2019s the release from Council Member Chris Tolbert\u2019s office:<\/p>\n<p>Councilmember Tolbert amends City\u2019s 2013 Legislative Agenda to support changes to State and Federal gun regulation<\/p>\n<p>St. Paul \u2013 In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy and gun violence around the country, Councilmember Chris Tolbert (Ward 3) and the Saint Paul City Council unanimously amended the City\u2019s Legislative Agenda to include provisions related to gun regulation.
