{"id":33127,"date":"2013-01-03T12:00:57","date_gmt":"2013-01-03T18:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=33127"},"modified":"2013-01-03T11:32:21","modified_gmt":"2013-01-03T17:32:21","slug":"depardeiued","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=33127","title":{"rendered":"Depardieu&#8217;ed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Joe Doakes from Como Park emails:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div lang=\"EN-US\">\n<p>As our \u201cleaders\u201d debate how to solve the fiscal cliff, the President seems intent on making sure the rich pay most of it.<\/p>\n<p>Let me just note some of the \u201ctax the rich\u201d schemes that already have been tried and found to be failures at best, counterproductive at worst:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Window_tax\" target=\"_blank\">Window tax,<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brick_tax\" target=\"_blank\">Brick tax<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wallpaper_tax\" target=\"_blank\">Wallpaper tax,<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hearth_tax\" target=\"_blank\">Hearth tax<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1992\/02\/07\/business\/falling-tax-would-lift-all-yachts.html\" target=\"_blank\">Yacht tax<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Look, here\u2019s the deal:\u00a0 rich people are rich, they\u2019re not stupid.\u00a0 Jack tax rates too high and they\u2019ll simply\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/12\/30\/world\/europe\/gerard-depardieu-stirs-belgian-border-town.html?pagewanted=all&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">move and take their money with them.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In every one of these schemes, the rich altered their behavior to avoid the taxes, the poor didn\u2019t pay taxes anyway, so the burden fell squarely on the middle class \u2013 too \u201crich\u201d to be exempt, too poor to escape.<\/p>\n<p>President Obama is a Harvard scholar.\u00a0 His advisors are the smartest in the world.\u00a0 He cannot be unaware of history.\u00a0 Why is he intent on repeating it?<\/p>\n<p>Why are Republicans even thinking about letting him repeat it?<\/p>\n<p>Joe Doakes<\/p>\n<p>Como Park<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div lang=\"EN-US\">\n<p>Because some GOP leaders are under the impression that you get points for losing gracefully.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Joe Doakes from Como Park emails: As our \u201cleaders\u201d debate how to solve the fiscal cliff, the President seems intent on making sure the rich pay most of it.
