{"id":311,"date":"2007-01-10T07:23:38","date_gmt":"2007-01-10T13:23:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php\/2007\/01\/10\/things-i-hate-part-mmmcclvi\/"},"modified":"2007-01-10T07:23:38","modified_gmt":"2007-01-10T13:23:38","slug":"things-i-hate-part-mmmcclvi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=311","title":{"rendered":"Things I Hate, Part MMMCCLVI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The phrase &#8220;[something someone said that the speaker doesn&#8217;t like] <em>speaks volumes<\/em>&#8230;&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed &#8211; but probably less about the subject than about the speaker.\u00a0 It&#8217;s become the new &#8220;at this point in time&#8221;, something people toss in when they don&#8217;t or can&#8217;t spend the intellectual effort to come up with a serious response.<\/p>\n<p>One acquaintance of mine once sniffed &#8220;the fact that you support Ann Coulter <em>speaks volumes.<\/em>&#8221;\u00a0 Perhaps.\u00a0 Volume I: the speaker was too lazy to say exactly what that meant.\u00a0 Volume II: the speaker ignored the context of the &#8220;support&#8221; (Coulter was in an argument with someone who, unlike her, is <em>always <\/em>crazy, and not just for Coulter&#8217;s theatrical effect).\u00a0 Volume III:\u00a0 You speak in code words, like &#8220;Coulter&#8221; and &#8220;Wingnut&#8221;, among those for whom those code words have meaning and outside of which do not.\u00a0 Volume IV: If challenged (and I did challenge) the speaker could not tell me which &#8220;volumes&#8221; were being &#8220;spoken&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Someone using the phrase &#8220;speaks volumes&#8221; indeed, itself, speaks&#8230;ill.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The phrase &#8220;[something someone said that the speaker doesn&#8217;t like] speaks volumes&#8230;&#8221;.
