{"id":3099,"date":"2008-08-19T08:00:44","date_gmt":"2008-08-19T13:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=3099"},"modified":"2008-08-19T08:38:30","modified_gmt":"2008-08-19T13:38:30","slug":"obsession","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=3099","title":{"rendered":"Obsession"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bob Collins <a href=\"http:\/\/minnesota.publicradio.org\/collections\/special\/columns\/news_cut\/archive\/2008\/08\/a_snapshot_of_minnesota.shtml\">on the DFL&#8217;s potemkin DNC delegation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s very, very &#8220;diverse&#8221; (in terms of color and orientation, anyway; ideology, not so much, but then it <em>is <\/em>a convention delegation.\u00a0 Although it might be mistaken for a small university&#8217;s English department).\u00a0 Much moreso, indeed, than the state it purports to represent:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You get the picture, but is it a picture of Minnesota? &#8220;It&#8217;s a good picture of the state of Minnesota,&#8221; Gilbert-Pederson said.Several speakers noted the Minnesota stereotype; we&#8217;re pretty white and the DFL delegation is meant to explode that stereotype.<\/p>\n<p>But the statistics don&#8217;t lie. Minnesota as a state <em>is<\/em> very white. He said the appearance of the DFL delegation in Denver will &#8220;contrast with what you see a week later&#8221; at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What do you mean by that?&#8221; MPR&#8217;s Curtis Gilbert asked.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;White,&#8221; he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Taxpayers.\u00a0 Family people.\u00a0 Veterans who&#8217;ve served in combat.\u00a0 People who&#8217;ve spent years stuffing envelopes and knocking on doors.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re a Republican, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>A skin tone trotted out for show and\/or ridicule, if you&#8217;re a Tic.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m happy to belong to a party that doesn&#8217;t <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/archives\/005309.html\">use skin color as a prop<\/a> for their facile propaganda.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bob Collins on the DFL&#8217;s potemkin DNC delegation.
