What Obama Said:<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes they just make things up. But they\u2019ve got a bunch of folks who can write $10 million checks, and they\u2019ll just keep on running them,\u201d he said. \u201cI mean, somebody was challenging one of their ads \u2014 they made it up \u2014 about work and welfare. And every outlet said this is just not true. And they were asked about it and they said \u2014 one of their campaign people said, \u2018We won\u2019t have the fact-checkers dictate our campaign. We will not let the truth get in the way.\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What really happened<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Mr. Obama was referring, as many other critics of the Romney campaign have, to a comment that its pollster, Neil Newhouse, made to reporters at the Republican convention on Tuesday, dismissive of those faulting the campaign\u2019s television ads. What Mr. Newhouse actually said was, \u201cThese fact-checkers come to those ads with their own sets of thoughts and beliefs. We\u2019re not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact-checkers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Newhouse did not say, \u201cWe will not let the truth get in the way<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

No, but you can bet your life that hundreds of leftybloggers and leftytweeps will say he did up until the election, and all the way through the 2016 campaign.<\/p>\n
